Thailand is preparing to host the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank Annual Meetings in Bangkok from October 12 to 18, with more than 15,000 participants from 191 countries expected to attend. According to Reuters, the gathering will bring together central bank governors, economic policymakers, business leaders and other international representatives at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center (QSNCC). The Ministry of Finance and Bank of Thailand have completed preparations on all fronts ahead of the official handover to the IMF and World Bank, with registration exceeding 15,000 attendees and continuing to increase, reflecting the international community's confidence in Thailand as a venue for global economic agenda-setting.
Thailand has implemented comprehensive security measures for the event, with security tightened at the meeting venue in central Bangkok and 21 official hotels, according to authorities. About 500 Tourist Police officers will help secure the venue, delegate hotels and tourist attractions through undercover deployments, patrols, drones and motorcade escorts coordinated with around 39 embassies, as confirmed by Tourist Police Bureau Commissioner Phongsiam Meekhanthong. To ease traffic congestion, Bangkok government offices will work from home on October 12, 14 and 15, while October 13 is an existing public holiday and October 16 has been declared a special government and bank holiday, with private companies and state enterprises asked to consider suitable arrangements. The highest level of security is being implemented in close coordination with the Royal Thai Police through a multi-tiered security zoning system featuring 17 X-ray checkpoints, 19 walk-through security gates, and integrated 24-hour CCTV surveillance, with dedicated security personnel stationed around the clock across all 21 official delegate hotels.
The Queen Sirikit National Convention Center (QSNCC) has elevated its operations to international benchmarks, with a state-of-the-art Master Control Room and broadcast transmission systems built to the same caliber as major global events like the FIFA World Cup and UEFA Champions League, managed by an elite team with direct operational experience from the World Economic Forum in Davos. The preparation team, headed by Dr. Ekniti Nitithanprapas, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, alongside Dr. Vinit Visessuvanapoom, Director General of the Fiscal Policy Office, and Mr. Nadhavudh Dhamasiri, Deputy Director General of the Fiscal Policy Office, guided members of the press through the venue to showcase its full readiness. The gathering comes at a time when governments and financial institutions are grappling with economic uncertainty, public debt pressures, climate challenges and the need for inclusive growth.
The meetings will feature several high-profile visiting leaders, including Swiss President Guy Parmelin, making the first official visit to Thailand by a Swiss president in 22 years, and Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, as confirmed by the Thai Foreign Ministry. The discussions will focus on the global economy, financial stability and development priorities, providing a platform for international cooperation on these critical economic challenges.
The meetings coincide with challenging weather conditions, with heavy to very heavy rain forecast for Bangkok and surrounding provinces on October 10–11, potentially causing localised flooding, according to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration. This follows parts of the city flooding two weeks ago following 320 mm (12.6 inches) of rain over three days, highlighting the logistical challenges Thailand faces in hosting such a large international gathering during the monsoon season.
