A large-scale Russian attack on Ukraine resulted in five civilian deaths in Kharkiv and at least 20 injuries in Kyiv on Monday, according to reports from Associated Press. The casualties included five rescuers killed in Kharkiv by a second Russian strike while fighting a blaze caused by an earlier attack, as confirmed by Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko. At least five other emergency workers were wounded in the same incident. In Kyiv, at least 20 people, including a child, sought medical help following the attacks. The latest reports indicate damage at 16 locations across the capital. According to UNITED24 Media, the attacks knocked out power to 140,000 residents in the northern part of the capital, with enemy attacks damaging power transmission lines.

A market and grocery store also caught fire during the attacks. In the Obolonskyi district, a nine-story residential building took a direct hit. Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, accused Russia of deliberately striking apartment blocks, stating "This is their deliberate decision." The attacks came after a wave of ballistic missiles followed by Shahed drones as many residents sought shelter underground. Officials urged residents to take cover during the attacks. As reported by UNITED24 Media, fires were also reported at warehouse facilities in a five-story building, in a multi-apartment residential building, and on the upper floors of an unfinished residential high-rise. Preliminary information indicated structural damage to another residential building, with destruction reported between the third and fourth floors.

Following the overnight strike, an urgent evacuation of religious relics and church items was conducted at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, including historic icons, antimensia, and other valuable objects. The Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, also known as the Monastery of the Caves, is a UNESCO-listed World Heritage site built from the 11th to 19th century, featuring churches connected by a labyrinthine complex of caves spanning more than 600 meters. Footage from the Perchersk Lavra showed towering flames licking up towards its domes, with six people reported injured at the site.

Poland, an EU and NATO member, scrambled fighter jets and put ground-based air defence systems on a state of readiness, according to the Polish armed forces. The attacks followed a period of relative quiet in Kyiv in recent days as Moscow prepared its drone and missile forces for the latest massive air attacks. Outside the capital, at least five people were killed in the city of Kharkiv in what appeared to be a double tap strike targeting emergency responders. The strikes came after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Sunday that he had spoken to Donald Trump ahead of a G7 meeting in France this week and discussed efforts to achieve an end to the more than four-year war.
