Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam on Sunday during Seychelles' Golden Jubilee National Day celebrations, marking their fourth meeting since Ramgoolam took office in November 2024. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the leaders discussed all facets of their bilateral relationship, including development cooperation, maritime security, trade, capacity building and people-to-people ties. Prime Minister Modi shared details of the meeting on social media platform X, describing it as productive and noting it was their second meeting this year after their discussions during the AI Summit earlier in 2026. Modi emphasized that "We discussed ways to strengthen the India-Mauritius partnership. The progress being made across every area of our Enhanced Strategic Partnership is a matter of satisfaction for us. A number of projects are being implemented under our Special Economic Package."
The two leaders reviewed the progress made in the implementation of India's Special Economic Package extended to Mauritius. As reported by the MEA, Prime Minister Modi underscored the importance attached by India to the development and progress of Mauritius, noting that ongoing bilateral projects will contribute to Mauritius's healthcare, connectivity, sustainable development and blue economy. The leaders agreed on the significance of the India-Mauritius Enhanced Strategic Partnership under India's Vision MAHASAGAR and Neighbourhood First policy, with shared commitment to the Global South. Prime Minister Modi noted that "a number of projects are being implemented under their Special Economic Package" and expressed satisfaction over the steady progress made under the Enhanced Strategic Partnership. According to Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, the discussions covered "ways ahead with regard to sectors such as capacity building, skilling, defence, energy, cyber security and more."
The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to continue working closely for mutual growth and for peace, stability and prosperity in the Indian Ocean Region. According to the MEA, they emphasized their shared vision for the region's development and security. Prime Minister Modi noted that the progress being made across every area of their Enhanced Strategic Partnership is a matter of satisfaction for both countries. The two Prime Ministers agreed on the significance of the India-Mauritius Enhanced Strategic Partnership under India's Vision MAHASAGAR and Neighbourhood First policy, with shared commitment to the Global South. In April, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar visited Mauritius for the inauguration of the first dedicated renal transplant unit in Mauritius, while assuring that the ongoing healthcare sector cooperation between the two nations is set to expand further. During his address at the inauguration of the Renal Transplant Unit at Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital in Mauritius, EAM Jaishankar mentioned the shared history of India and Mauritius, which he said continues to shape the relationship between both nations. He also conveyed Prime Minister Modi's warm greetings to the people of Mauritius, emphasizing that "Mauritius is not a partner. Mauritius is part of our family" and describing the relationship as "Ye Dil ka Rishta" - a connection of heart that is not just reflected in words but also in meaningful action.
