According to Meta's Q2 filing, the company generated $59.36 billion in advertising revenue, representing a 27% increase year-over-year. This performance brought Meta's advertising revenue within striking distance of Google's, which reported $63.27 billion from 'Google Search & other' segments, up 17%. The gap between the two tech giants narrowed to $3.9 billion, significantly reduced from nearly double the amount in the previous year. As reported by Bernstein analyst Mark Shmulik, Meta is "arguably has seen the largest impact from AI on ad growth and is on track to surpass Google Search this year."
According to Bernstein analysis, Meta captured nearly half of every new digital ad dollar in the quarter, demonstrating its growing market dominance. The company's AI integration has been particularly effective, with Meta serving 14% more ads and charging 12% more for each advertisement. This performance improvement comes as AI technology continues to sharpen recommendations and targeting capabilities across Meta's platforms. The company's advertising growth significantly outpaced Google's 17% increase, indicating Meta's stronger momentum in the competitive digital advertising market.
Despite Meta's strong advertising performance and narrowing gap with Google, Meta shares have declined over the past year while Alphabet stock has climbed. As reported by TipRanks, Wall Street analysts show 38 buys and no sells on Alphabet stock, with an average target price of $752.61. The primary reason for this divergence appears to be investor concerns about Meta's infrastructure spending compared to Alphabet's cloud segment performance. Alphabet's cloud division generated $24.8 billion, up 82%, while Meta has no comparable cloud segment to show investors.
Meta's next major growth opportunity lies in its Business Agent platform, which serves more than one million businesses across WhatsApp and Messenger platforms, with Instagram expansion currently underway. According to the report, paid plans are coming for this service, which could significantly boost Meta's advertising revenue. The company's faster ad engine technology positions it well for continued growth in the competitive digital advertising landscape, though Alphabet maintains more visible ways to monetize AI technology through its cloud and other services.
