Meta Platforms Inc. is considering raising equity capital following Alphabet Inc.'s successful $85 billion share sale, according to reports from the Financial Times. The social media company is evaluating the need for additional funding to support its massive artificial intelligence infrastructure investments, similar to how Google's parent company structured its recent capital raise.
Meta shares experienced a significant decline, slipping as much as 7% to $582.91 on the report, as reported by the Financial Times. A company spokesperson described the speculation as "pure speculation" and emphasized Meta's commitment to AI opportunities. The spokesperson stated that "We've been clear that huge opportunities lie ahead in AI, and we'll continue focusing on raising capital in the most flexible ways to support that."
Meta's potential equity raise is driven by substantial capital needs for AI infrastructure development. According to the Financial Times, the company recently boosted full-year capital expenditures to as much as $145 billion, an increase primarily attributed to rising component prices. The company has not yet engaged investment banks for the potential offering, and there is no guarantee that new stock will ultimately be issued.
Alphabet's recent offering demonstrated strong market demand, with the company raising $18 billion through Class A shares and Class C Capital Stock, exceeding its $15 billion target. As reported by Bloomberg, the offering was "multiple times oversubscribed," providing a successful template for Meta's potential fundraising efforts.
