This represents a fundamental shift from the first phase of AI investments centered on chip manufacturing to the second phase focusing on the physical infrastructure required to make AI applications functional.
The scale of AI infrastructure demand is unprecedented, with projections indicating exponential growth in power consumption. As reported by Goldman Sachs Research, global data-centre power demand could rise 50% by 2027 and as much as 165% by the end of the decade from 2023 levels. The International Energy Agency estimates that data centres consumed approximately 415 terawatt-hours of electricity in 2024, representing roughly 1.5% of global electricity consumption. This growth rate of 12% annually over the past five years demonstrates the accelerating pace of AI infrastructure expansion.
The surge in AI infrastructure is creating unprecedented strain on existing power grids and transmission systems. According to Reuters reports, US power demand is projected to reach fresh records in 2026 and 2027, with consumption rising from a record 4,195 billion kilowatt-hours in 2025 to 4,271 billion kWh in 2026 and 4,397 billion kWh in 2027. PJM Interconnection, the largest US grid operator, has issued warnings as high summer demand has pushed electricity prices from around $30 to more than $300 per megawatt-hour during peak periods, particularly straining transmission lines in northern Virginia, one of the world's biggest data-centre hubs.
