Nithin Kamath, Founder and CEO of Zerodha, addressed a client query on Tuesday regarding account maintenance charges (AMC), stating that "Zerodha does charge annual account maintenance charges (AMC), but a majority of its customers end up paying nothing." According to reports from ET Now, Kamath responded to a common query from clients, revealing that of Zerodha's nearly 2 crore clients, only about 40 per cent paid AMC during the year. This means 60 per cent of customers don't pay any AMC because their holdings value falls within the Basic Services Demat Account (BSDA) limit.
As reported by ET Now, accounts with securities holdings valued at less than ₹4 lakh qualify as Basic Services Demat Accounts (BSDA). Kamath explained that "there's no AMC on a BSDA as long as you only have one demat." The CEO also reminded users that the AMC is free for the first year for all Zerodha accounts. However, he noted that the threshold limit is ₹10 lakh now, with the condition that the account holder has only one demat account.
Groww Asset Management Company (Groww AMC) has completed its strategic investment transaction with US based State Street Investment Management after receiving the necessary regulatory approvals, the companies informed on August 31, 2026. Under the transaction, State Street Investment Management will hold a 4.85% voting interest and 23% economic interest in Groww AMC. The deal was initially announced in January 2026 and comes at a time when Groww AMC is expanding its presence across active as well as passive mutual fund offerings. As part of the collaboration, Groww AMC and State Street Investment Management are expected to work across areas such as ETFs, indexing, systematic investment strategies and portfolio construction.
The AMC clarification came amid an unexpected social media exchange involving Zerodha's leadership. VP Dinesh Pai jokingly declared Nikhil Kamath better looking than his brother Nithin on X, asking others not to tell Nithin. According to reports, Pai wrote "Don't tell Nithin I said this, but Nikhil is better looking" and added that choosing Nikhil was the "natural choice." The exchange attracted social media attention, with users sharing jokes about the Kamath brothers' similar names and the unexpected sibling comparison.
