Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions achieved their highest-ever monthly transaction value in July 2026, with 23.66 billion transactions worth ₹29.88 lakh crore, according to data shared by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). As reported by The Times of India, transaction volume rose 4.1 per cent compared with June, while the value increased 3.3 per cent from ₹28.92 lakh crore. The milestone comes after a marginal dip in June, highlighting the continued expansion of digital payments across the country. On an average, UPI processed 763 million transactions a day during July, with average daily transaction value at ₹96,383 crore. The growth was driven by everyday digital payments and expanding adoption beyond metropolitan markets, with the increase occurring without seasonal or structural tailwinds. PayNearby MD and CEO Anand Kumar Bajaj emphasized that UPI continues to strengthen the foundation of India's digital payments ecosystem, reaffirming its role as the preferred mode of payment for millions of Indians.
Compared with the same period last year, transaction value surged 19 per cent from ₹25.08 lakh crore in July 2025 to ₹29.88 lakh crore in July 2026, according to The Times of India. This organic growth reflects the maturation of UPI beyond occasional use to becoming part of everyday transactions across tier 2, tier 3 and rural markets. The July transaction count exceeded the previous monthly record of 23.20 billion transactions set in May this year, with the transaction value reaching a new all-time high. Users are increasingly using UPI for local purchases, recharges, bill payments and money transfers, supported by growing familiarity, wider acceptance and trusted assistance within communities. The platform continues to strengthen its position as the preferred mode of payment for millions of Indians, with PayNearby MD and CEO Anand Kumar Bajaj noting that the growth is being driven purely by organic, everyday transaction behaviour rather than any seasonal or structural event.
UPI has expanded its operations to nearly ten international nations, including UAE, Singapore, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, France, Mauritius, and Qatar, as reported by The Economic Times. This global expansion has resulted in increased remittance transfers, inclusion of more people in the financial system, and establishing India's stronghold in the worldwide fintech environment. The positive global acceptance of UPI has made India a front-runner in the global digital payments arena, demonstrating the platform's universal appeal and practicality across different markets and cultures. This international growth complements the domestic expansion, reinforcing UPI's position as a truly global digital payment solution.
As of June, Walmart-backed PhonePe continued to lead the UPI ecosystem with 10.48 billion transactions, followed by Google Pay and Paytm. According to The Hindu BusinessLine, WhatsApp had overtaken CRED in transaction volumes during the month. Reeju Datta, co-founder of Cashfree Payments, noted that July had none of those tailwinds, meaning the growth is being driven purely by organic, everyday transaction behaviour rather than any seasonal or structural event. The platform, run by NPCI - an initiative of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Indian Banks' Association - continues to operate as the umbrella organisation for retail payments and settlement systems in India, running UPI for real-time payments between peers or at merchants' end while making purchases.
As UPI adoption deepens, the focus must remain on building trust, awareness and ease of usage at the grassroots level, according to industry experts. As reported by The Hindu BusinessLine, Anand Kumar Bajaj, Founder, MD and CEO of PayNearby, said the focus should remain on strengthening trust, awareness and ease of usage at the grassroots to ensure that the growth in digital payments translates into broader financial inclusion. With the festive season approaching, digital payment adoption is expected to gain further momentum, led by rising participation from smaller towns and rural Bharat. The platform, run by NPCI - an apex body for running retail payment and settlement systems in India, continues to operate as the umbrella organisation for retail payments and settlement systems in India, running UPI for real-time payments between peers or at merchants' end while making purchases.
