The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is developing a Unified Agent Protocol (UAP) that could fundamentally transform digital commerce in India. According to reports from NDTV Profit, this proposed protocol would create a common trust layer enabling AI agents to transact on UPI on behalf of their human principals. If successfully implemented, India could become the first country with national infrastructure for agentic payments, potentially leapfrogging fragmented standards emerging elsewhere globally. The protocol represents a quiet piece of plumbing being laid that could rearrange the economics of persuasion, with AI agents, registered, verified and authorised, transacting on UPI for users in India.
The UAP protocol represents a significant shift from traditional digital commerce models. As reported by NDTV Profit, agentic commerce could replace traditional search and clicks with instant AI-driven purchases, compressing discovery, comparison, and purchase into seconds. This development suggests the decline of the click as the privileged gesture in digital advertising, with grocery replenishment, bill payments and other low-consideration purchases increasingly discovered, compared and bought by software while humans attend to life. An agent can collapse those steps into a single transaction executed in milliseconds, with entire categories potentially having no meaningful customer journey left to map.
The protocol could provide richer attribution than today's ecosystem by recording comprehensive transaction data. According to the analysis, AI agents can record every option considered, every product rejected and every reason for doing so, creating standardized records of verified agents and their transactions. This could become one of the most neutral sources of attribution available, sitting outside the walled gardens that have marked their own data for two decades. The model assumes a human journey with visible touchpoints, but in the agentic era, credit migrates to whoever influences the agent's consideration set - the agent platform, marketplace, publisher, or brand that shaped the machine's preferences.
The development requires marketers to treat product data as media and audit feeds with the rigour previously reserved for television commercials. As reported by NDTV Profit, brands must invest in verifiable trust through reviews, service records, and fulfilment performance to shape machine recommendations. The analysis suggests that enduring brands become the instruction itself as machines reward evidence-based products, while traditional advertising becomes less visible but potentially more valuable through enhanced brand building. Structured product data, verified reviews, pricing integrity, stock availability, service records and delivery reliability become persuasive assets that have long belonged to catalogue and operations teams but now become strategic advantage in the agentic era.
