Vedanta Power will join the Nifty 500 and Nifty Smallcap 250 indices on September 30, as reported by The Hindu BusinessLine. The Anil Agarwal-led company was recently listed on the exchanges following its demerger from Vedanta. The inclusion will come into effect after the close of trading on September 29. With its inclusion in the Nifty Smallcap 250, Vedanta Power will also become part of the Nifty MidSmallcap 400 and Nifty Smallcap 500 indices. The inclusion will expand the company's representation across widely tracked market benchmarks, though analysts note that index inclusion does not automatically translate into additional fund flows or a valuation re-rating.
Vedanta Power shares rose nearly 5% during Wednesday's intraday trading session ahead of its inclusion in the Nifty 500 and Nifty Smallcap 250 indices, according to latest market data. The stock was trading 5.6% higher at ₹32.83 per share on BSE with a market capitalisation of ₹12,837.80 crore at 12:15 pm on Wednesday, September 23. The shares touched an intraday high of ₹33.44 per share and an intraday low of ₹31.27 per share during the trading session. Despite the recent rally, the stock has declined 25.82% in three months and around 9.53% in one month, with the company scrip hitting its 52-week high of ₹52.49 per share on July 3, 2026, and dipping to its 52-week low of ₹30.44 per share on September 18, 2026.
The inclusion comes as Vedanta Power embarks on an aggressive capacity expansion programme, according to the report. The company currently has about 5 GW of operational generation capacity and expects to add about 600 MW by the end of FY27. It is targeting 12 GW by FY33, implying nearly a three-fold expansion from its FY26 operational base. The company has also outlined a longer-term ambition of reaching 20 GW. This expansion strategy positions Vedanta Power to capitalize on India's growing electricity demand, with the CEA estimating peak electricity demand at 277.2 GW for FY27, up from 260.1 GW in FY26.
Vedanta Power operates the Talwandi Sabo Thermal Power Plant, Sakti Thermal Power Plant, Meenakshi Energy and Jharsuguda Thermal Power Plant. About 85 per cent of its capacity is backed by long-term domestic coal linkages, providing greater visibility on fuel availability, as reported by The Hindu BusinessLine. This fuel security strategy becomes particularly important as coal and lignite-based power stations supplied 69.54% of electricity generated in India during April to June 2026, highlighting the continued importance of thermal generation despite the renewable energy push.
Vedanta Power's inclusion in Nifty 500 may improve stock's visibility among institutional investors and potentially bring passive/index-linked flows, according to Khushi Mistry Research Analyst at Bonanza. However, experts caution that the index inclusion should be viewed as a near-term sentiment and liquidity catalyst rather than a standalone fundamental trigger. The bigger question for the stock's medium-term outlook will be the company's earnings trajectory, power demand environment, capacity expansion and balance-sheet position, with sustained upside depending on operational performance and profitability supporting the valuation. The expansion plans come amid rising electricity demand from manufacturing, infrastructure, data centres, electric mobility and urbanisation, with India's clean-energy goal of 500 GW non-fossil fuel installed capacity by 2030 progressing well.
