Shriram Finance stock moved higher by 7% to ₹990 on the BSE in Tuesday's intraday deals, driven by value buying according to reports from Business Standard. The non-banking finance company's share price had declined 10% over the past month amid challenging macroeconomic conditions. However, the broader market sentiment improved significantly with Sensex surging 1,109.10 points (1.54%) to close at 73,033.78 and Nifty advancing 358.60 points (1.6%) to settle at 22,721.95. At 02:39 PM, the stock was quoted 6% higher at ₹984.90, outperforming the 1.2% rise in the BSE Sensex during the previous session.
The market rally was primarily driven by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman's remarks indicating openness to discussions on key market-related taxes, including Long Term Capital Gains (LTCG) tax and Securities Transaction Tax (STT). As reported by Business Standard, the Finance Minister said she would be keen to hear the views of market participants on these taxes, describing such debates as healthy. Her comments boosted investor confidence and sparked broad-based buying across sectors, with technology stocks leading the rally and Shriram Finance featuring prominently among the day's best-performing stocks.
According to Bloomberg reports citing people with knowledge of the matter, Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG) is considering increasing its stake in Shriram Finance to over 50% from around 20% currently. This potential stake increase would represent a significant expansion of MUFG's control in the Indian NBFC, though the deal has not been finalized. The development adds another layer of strategic interest in the company beyond the recent value buying activity and broader market optimism.
According to analysts at Motilal Oswal Financial Services (MOFSL), the stock correction was driven by renewed escalation in the West Asia conflict, sharp rebound in crude prices, elevated bond yields, and weaker-than-expected monsoons. As reported by Business Standard, monsoon trends have added uncertainty with cumulative rainfall year-to-date (YTD) 12% below the long-period average. The brokerage noted that combined 6.62 million shares changed hands on the NSE and BSE during the trading session, with the recovery extending beyond frontline indices as Nifty MidCap rose 1.06% and Nifty SmallCap added 0.11%.
