Individual investors maintained their net buyer status for the third consecutive month in May, with net inflows reaching ₹23,728 crore for FY27 up to May-end, according to reports from Business Standard. Despite the moderation from previous months, retail investors continued contributing positively to market flows during a period when markets faced pressure from offshore investor outflows.
New investor registrations in India's stock markets declined 2.5% month-on-month to 10.5 lakh in May amid ongoing geopolitical tensions and market volatility, as reported by NSE. However, the pace of reduction was the slowest recorded in the past 12 months, providing some relief to the overall decline trend. On a year-on-year basis, new investor additions were 8.2% lower than May 2025, with Southern India recording the sharpest decline at 16.6% year-on-year and Western India witnessing an 8.7% decline.
Despite the overall slowdown, North India continued to account for the largest share of new investor registrations at 42.2% during May 2026, followed by Southern India at 22.3%, Western India at 21.2%, and Eastern India at 14%, according to NSE data. The report highlighted a notable shift in geographical distribution, with North India's share increasing by 5 percentage points between FY22 and FY27TD, largely driven by Uttar Pradesh whose share of registrations increased by 4.8 percentage points during this period. In contrast, Western India's share declined by around 10 percentage points over the same period, with Maharashtra accounting for a large part of this decline with its share falling by 6.3 percentage points.
Among individual states, Uttar Pradesh emerged as the largest contributor to new investor registrations, accounting for 16.1% of all new additions and adding around 1.7 lakh new investors during May 2026, as reported by NSE. Maharashtra followed with a 11% share and around 1.1 lakh registrations, while West Bengal accounted for 6.7% of new additions, Bihar for 6.6%, and Tamil Nadu for 6%. Together, the top five states contributed 46.4% of total new investor additions during May 2026.
