The National Stock Exchange (NSE) has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Bombay Metal Exchange (BME) to expand participation in non-ferrous metal derivatives trading. According to reports from Business Standard, this collaboration brings together NSE's derivatives market infrastructure and BME's expertise in the non-ferrous metals trade and industry ecosystem. The partnership aims to strengthen market participation, improve price risk management practices and support the development of hedging tools for stakeholders across the non-ferrous metals value chain. As per the latest reports, BME carries a rich legacy of more than nine decades and has established a strong global network across the non-ferrous metals trade and industry ecosystem.
India is among the world's largest consumers of industrial metals such as copper, aluminium, zinc, lead and nickel. As reported by Business Standard, the growing demand from manufacturing, infrastructure, renewable energy and electric mobility sectors is increasing the need for transparent and efficient mechanisms to manage commodity price volatility. The partnership addresses this growing market need through enhanced derivatives trading capabilities. According to the latest NSE release, as domestic manufacturing, infrastructure development, renewable energy, and electric mobility continue to expand, market participants increasingly require transparent and efficient mechanisms to manage price volatility. Through this collaboration, NSE and BME will work together to develop new products in the non-ferrous metals space and promote awareness focused on price risk management using tools such as exchange-traded non-ferrous metal derivatives.
Under the partnership, the two organisations will work on developing new products in the non-ferrous metals segment and promote awareness of exchange-traded derivatives as risk management tools. According to Business Standard, they will also undertake industry outreach initiatives to encourage wider participation from producers, consumers, processors, traders, importers, exporters, industry associations and financial market participants. As part of the agreement, NSE and BME will jointly undertake industry outreach initiatives aimed at enhancing awareness of non-ferrous metal derivatives and their role in effective price risk management. This comprehensive approach aims to build a robust derivatives ecosystem for the metals sector.
Sriram Krishnan, chief business development officer of NSE, stated that the collaboration aims to deepen awareness and participation in non-ferrous metal derivatives and help businesses manage commodity price risks more effectively. As reported by Business Standard, Sushil R. Kothari, president of BME, emphasized that the partnership would help bridge the gap between physical and derivatives markets by increasing awareness of risk management tools and encouraging broader participation across the industry. According to the latest NSE release, Sriram Krishnan said: "India's growing industrial economy requires efficient and transparent risk management tools to support businesses exposed to commodity price fluctuations. Through our collaboration with BME, we aim to deepen awareness and participation in non-ferrous metal derivatives, enabling market participants to manage price risks more effectively and contribute to the development of a vibrant commodity derivatives ecosystem in India." Sushil R Kothari added: "We are delighted to partner with NSE through this important initiative aimed at strengthening India's non-ferrous metals ecosystem. This collaboration will help bridge the gap between the physical and derivatives markets by creating greater awareness about risk management tools and encouraging wider participation from producers, consumers, traders and processors."
NSE stated that the initiative reflects the shared commitment of both organisations to support the growth of India's commodity markets and provide efficient and transparent risk management solutions to market participants. According to Business Standard, this strategic partnership positions both exchanges to capitalize on the growing demand for commodity derivatives in India's expanding industrial and infrastructure sectors. The partnership aims to strengthen market participation, enhance price risk management practices, and support the development of efficient hedging tools for stakeholders across the non-ferrous metals value chain. As per the latest NSE release, the collaboration brings together NSE's robust derivatives market infrastructure and BME's longstanding expertise and deep engagement with India's physical non-ferrous metals ecosystem.
