The BSE Sensex staged a notable recovery, gaining 364.80 points to close at 76,588.94, marking a modest increase of 0.13% after opening sharply lower by 264.82 points. The Nifty 50 also showed resilience, supported by broad-based sectoral gains, with the index demonstrating strong recovery momentum. According to latest reports, midcap and smallcap indices outperformed the broader market, with the S&P BSE Midcap 150 index rising 0.52% and the S&P BSE Smallcap 250 index gaining 0.88%. This broad-based rally was supported by select midcap and smallcap stocks hitting new 52-week highs, reflecting underlying sectoral strength and positive earnings expectations.
Adani Total Gas emerged as the standout performer, surging 8.48% during the session and hitting its 52-week high at ₹705 per share, buoyed by strong sectoral tailwinds and positive investor sentiment around energy transition themes. Maharashtra Scooters and Cemindia Projects also posted robust gains of 7.88% and 6.63% respectively, reflecting renewed interest in mid and smallcap stocks with solid growth prospects. In the large-cap segment, Info Edge (India) was the top gainer, rallying 4.31% on the back of strong earnings expectations and positive sectoral momentum in the digital services space. However, some stocks faced selling pressure, with Techno Electric & Engineering plunging 11.43% amid profit-booking and sector-specific concerns.
The recovery was broad-based across market capitalisation segments, with out of 38 sectors tracked on the BSE, 35 advanced while only three declined. The S&P BSE Utilities sector emerged as the top gainer, rising 1.03%, driven by renewed investor interest in power and infrastructure-related stocks. The S&P BSE Telecom index hit a fresh 52-week high during the session, with cyclical sectors such as basic materials and telecom posting strong gains. However, the Nifty Pharma sector was the only notable laggard, declining 0.37%, pressured by profit-taking and subdued global pharmaceutical cues. The advance-decline ratio on the BSE 500 was a healthy 2.32x, with 348 stocks advancing against 150 declining, indicating broad-based buying interest and supporting the notion of a sustainable recovery.
The market's resilience came despite mixed global cues, including concerns over inflation and central bank policies in major economies. Foreign institutional investors remained cautious amid the volatile session, with subdued buying interest weighing on early market sentiment. However, domestic institutional investors (DIIs) continued to support the market, selectively accumulating quality stocks in the utilities and midcap segments. The Sensex is currently trading comfortably above its 50-day moving average (DMA), signalling short-term strength, although the 50DMA remains below the 200DMA, indicating that the medium-term trend is yet to fully confirm a sustained uptrend. Market participants are now looking ahead to key corporate earnings announcements scheduled for 27 May 2026, including Cummins India, GMR Airports, and Physicswallah, which are expected to provide further direction to the market.
