The Nifty IT index closed with strong gains on May 19, 2026, surging 3.23% despite broader market weakness. The positive momentum in IT stocks came amid a challenging session where a rising dollar and Fed rate hike fears weighed on investor sentiment across other sectors.

This performance contrasts sharply with the 5.32% decline in the benchmark Nifty 50 index during the same period, highlighting the technology sector's underperformance relative to the broader market. The sector's year-on-year decline of 22.00% represents one of the steepest declines among major indices, though recent performance shows signs of recovery with the index gaining 7.12% over three consecutive trading sessions.
Despite weakness in frontline indices, broader markets outperformed significantly. The BSE MidCap index rose 0.73% and the SmallCap index gained 1.17%, signalling continued interest in broader market stocks. Market breadth remained positive on the BSE, where 2,590 shares advanced against 1,596 declines, while the India VIX dropped 4.86% to 18.68, indicating easing fear among investors. Sectorally, IT stocks witnessed value buying and supported the market, while private banks and financial shares remained under pressure.
