Indian equities ended weak on Friday as renewed US-Iran hostilities near the Strait of Hormuz dampened investor sentiment. According to reports from The Economic Times, the S&P BSE Sensex dropped 516.33 points or 0.66% to 77,328.19, while the NSE Nifty 50 lost 150.50 points or 0.62% to close at 24,176.15. The market notched up weekly gains despite Friday's decline, with falling oil prices providing some support to offset geopolitical concerns. Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments, noted that "Markets witnessed a risk-off session following fresh US-Iran military action near the Strait of Hormuz, which weakened ceasefire hopes and triggered profit booking."
As reported by The Economic Times, Christy Mathai, fund manager at Quantum Mutual Fund, noted that "The military confrontation between the US and Iran, despite talks of negotiation, kept investors on the edge." Market analysts highlighted concerns about elevated commodities potentially toning down earnings expectations in the next few quarters due to higher input costs. Brent crude oil for July 2026 settlement gained 0.57 cents or 0.57% to $100.63 a barrel, with contracts rising above the $100-per-barrel mark, stoking fears of rising inflation and a spike in India's import bill. However, the fall in oil prices helped cushion some of the geopolitical impact and contributed to the week's positive performance. Vinod Nair from Geojit Investments added that "though the road ahead is slightly bumpy, optimism around a possible diplomatic resolution persists," while noting that stability in crude oil prices around $100 per barrel and softer US bond yields continue to support overall market sentiment and the rupee.
