India's investor demographics are undergoing a significant transformation, with the median investor age declining from 38 years in March 2020 to 33 years in June 2026. According to the National Stock Exchange's Market Ki Pulse report, this represents a substantial shift in the country's investment landscape. The proportion of investors aged below 30 years has experienced remarkable growth, increasing from 23.5% in March 2020 to 37.9% in June 2026. This younger cohort now represents 59% of new investor registrations during FY27 to date, covering April to June 2026, compared to 52% in FY20. The NSE report emphasized that "The investor base is growing beyond traditional market hubs, while becoming younger and gradually more gender-diverse."
The scale of India's retail investment growth is evident in the total registered investor base, which reached 13.2 crore as of June 2026. Market participation demonstrated exceptional momentum, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 34.01% between FY21 and FY26. This growth rate significantly outpaced the 19.3% CAGR recorded between FY16 and FY21, indicating accelerating retail participation in Indian capital markets. The NSE report emphasized that this growth is occurring beyond traditional market hubs, with the investor base becoming increasingly geographically diverse.
The investment landscape is witnessing increased gender diversity, with women now accounting for 25% of all investors nationwide. As reported by the NSE, Maharashtra recorded the highest proportion of female investors at 28.9%, followed closely by Tamil Nadu at 28.5% and Uttar Pradesh at 19.1%. The geographic concentration shows that the top five states - Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, West Bengal, and Rajasthan - collectively accounted for 47.6% of the national investor base. Meanwhile, states situated beyond the top 10 now represent 26.9% of total investors, up from approximately 22% in FY17. North India leads the country's investor base with a 36.8% regional share as of June 2026, followed by West India at 29.1%, South India at 21.1%, and East India at 12.1%.
