Global financial services firm Goldman Sachs on Thursday acquired 1.13 crore equity shares representing a 0.18% stake in Billionbrains Garage Ventures, the parent company of stockbroking platform Groww, through an open market transaction. According to block deal data available on the BSE, Goldman Sachs Bank Europe SE purchased 1,13,43,750 equity shares from venture capital firm Friale at an average price of ₹185.50 per share, resulting in a total deal value of ₹210.43 crore. Following this institutional interest, Groww shares gained 3.9% to reach an intraday high of ₹195.80 on the BSE, demonstrating strong positive market response to the strategic investment.
On Monday, markets regulator Sebi approved US-based State Street Global Advisors' (SSGA) proposed stake acquisition in Groww Asset Management (Groww AMC), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Billionbrains Garage Ventures. According to the approved transaction, SSGA will acquire shares in Groww AMC and upon completion of the deal will hold voting rights of 4.85% and an economic interest of 22.94% in the fully diluted share capital of the asset manager. This regulatory approval adds another major institutional player to the company's investor base alongside Goldman Sachs.
According to the latest financial results, Billionbrains Garage Ventures reported exceptional growth in the quarter ended March 2026. The company posted a more than two-fold growth in profit after tax to ₹686 crore compared to ₹309 crore in the same quarter of the preceding fiscal year. Groww's total income surged 81% year-on-year to ₹1,536 crore in the quarter under review from ₹850 crore in the January-March quarter of 2025. This robust financial performance provides strong fundamentals for the recent institutional investments and reflects the company's successful business model in the competitive fintech sector.
The market response to Goldman Sachs' acquisition was immediate and positive, with Groww shares demonstrating strong momentum throughout the trading session. According to market data, the stock gained 3.9% to reach an intraday high of ₹195.80 on the BSE, significantly outperforming the broader market where the BSE Sensex was up only 0.01% at 74,367.45. However, at 10:59 AM, the gains pared slightly but Groww shares remained up 2.71% at ₹195.20, indicating sustained investor interest in the Bengaluru-based trading platform.
Last month, US-based Peak XV Partners, Ribbit Capital and Y Combinator divested a combined 4.71% stake in Billionbrains Garage Ventures for ₹5,326 crore. This significant divestment by major venture capital firms preceded the Goldman Sachs acquisition and indicates strong investor confidence in the company's growth trajectory. The transaction demonstrates the continued institutional interest in Groww's parent company despite the substantial stake sale by existing investors.
