Capital market stocks staged a strong recovery in April 2026, with the Nifty Capital Market index climbing 23.20% during the month. According to reports from Live Mint, this performance significantly outpaced the broader market, as the Nifty 50 rose 7.4% during the same period. The recovery came after four months of severe declines, with capital market stocks having closed lower for four consecutive months through March. The revival was driven by easing geopolitical tensions in West Asia and a slowdown in foreign portfolio investor (FPI) selling, providing much-needed support to Asia's third-largest economy.
Billionbrains Garage Ventures, the parent company of trading platform Groww, emerged as the top performer with a 43% return during April. As reported by Live Mint, a major part of the rally was triggered after the company posted strong Q4 numbers, with Middle East war-driven market volatility boosting trading activity in derivatives and commodities. Angel One's Q4 net profit surged 83%, driven by stronger client trading activity and higher order volumes, propelling the stock to a 36% monthly gain - marking its biggest monthly jump since October 2023. Both listed exchange stocks performed strongly, with BSE closing the month with a 35.7% gain and MCX posting a 24.4% increase.
The asset management sector witnessed significant gains, with Nippon Life India Asset Management surging 26% following better-than-expected March quarter performance that pushed the stock to a fresh record high of ₹1,065 per share. According to Live Mint, other asset management companies also posted strong gains, with HDFC AMC, Anand Rathi Wealth, ICICI Prudential Asset Management, Aditya Birla Sun Life AMC, and Nuvama Wealth Management moving up between 14% and 22.4%. The sector benefited from higher trading volumes, increased investor participation, and stronger inflows that supported revenue visibility for brokerages, exchanges, and asset managers.
The positive sentiment was further supported by regulatory developments, with the RBI giving a three-month extension for implementing capital market exposure norms that were earlier scheduled to come into effect on April 1. As reported by Live Mint, this provided relief to the sector. The recovery also came after February's severe volatility when the Union Budget increased the securities transaction tax (STT) on the equity derivatives segment to curb speculative trading. Several companies also released March quarter earnings that beat Street estimates, further aiding the rally across the capital market sector.
