Despite a 14% decline in the Nifty 50 this year, Indian asset management companies (AMCs) have demonstrated stark divergence in performance. According to reports from Bloomberg, some AMC stocks have gained up to 23% while others have fallen over 30%. The sector's performance reflects growing differences in how investors view each company's growth prospects, market share, and valuation. As reported by Bloomberg, Aditya Birla Sun Life AMC recorded a 23.15% gain, Nippon Life India AMC rose by 18.91%, and ICICI Prudential AMC increased by 15.91% in 2026, defying the overall market trend.
Recent data from The Economic Times shows that listed AMCs have significantly outperformed the broader market in the first half of FY27. Among the seven listed AMCs, five have outperformed the Sensex, with shares gaining between 3% and 33% during the period. Nippon Life India Asset Management led the gains with a 33% surge in the first six months of FY27, followed by Aditya Birla Sun Life AMC at 13% and ICICI Prudential AMC at 12%. SBI Funds Management's performance is not comparable since it was listed on the bourses in July and has fallen 18% so far since listing.
Despite market volatility, asset management companies have maintained robust retail investor support through systematic investment plans. According to The Economic Times, SIP inflows have remained in the ₹31,000-32,000 crore range in FY27, with August inflows rising 21% year-on-year to ₹32,297 crore. Total SIP inflows reached ₹1.6 lakh crore during April-August, up 15% from ₹1.4 lakh crore in the same period last year. Prayesh Jain from Motilal Oswal Financial Services noted that while net inflows have moderated from peak levels, healthy inflows continue to support the sector. The lower-than-expected impact of the revised expense ratio framework has further eased concerns over pressure on AMCs' profitability.
The sector's growth momentum is reflected in the substantial increase in assets under management. According to Accord Fintech data cited by The Economic Times, the AUM of seven listed AMCs rose nearly 16% to ₹53.9 lakh crore at the end of August from ₹46.6 lakh crore at the end of March. This growth trajectory supports the continued outperformance of select AMC stocks despite broader market challenges, with the main source of support remaining comprised of inflows into Systematic Investment Plans with retail investors maintaining regular monthly investments even amid market volatility.
