
The Indian benchmark indices closed in positive territory on Monday, May 4, with the SENSEX gaining 355.90 points or 0.46% to close at 77,269.40 and the NIFTY50 surging 121.75 points or 0.51% to end at 24,119.30. According to reports from Upstox, the SENSEX rallied as much as 1.3% to an intraday high of 77,910.75, while the NIFTY50 touched the session's peak of 24,290.20. The positive sentiment was supported by buying in realty stocks and a fall in global crude oil prices amid easing geopolitical tensions.
Adani Ports & SEZ led the NIFTY50 pack with a massive 5.41% gain, as reported by Upstox, following its announcement of monthly business updates. The company handled a cargo volume of 43.1 MMT (+15% Year-on-Year) in April 2026. Other significant gainers included Eicher Motors (3.11%) after its subsidiary Royal Enfield posted a 31% rise in total sales at 1,13,164 units in April 2026 compared to 86,559 units in the same month last year. Jio Financial Services (2.98%) and Adani Enterprises (2.68%) also featured among the top performers, along with Reliance Industries (2.54%).
According to exchange data reported by Upstox, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold stocks worth ₹8,047.86 crore on Thursday, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) purchased equities worth ₹3,487.10 crore on a net basis. The NSE Midcap gauge closed at 60,159.75, up by 374.90 points or 0.63%, supported by gains in Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL), which ended 7.59% higher after reporting a consolidated net profit of ₹1,290 crore for Q3 FY26, representing a 156% increase from ₹504 crore in the same period last year.
As reported by Upstox, investor sentiment turned positive after Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led BJP won West Bengal assembly elections for the first time and returned to power in Assam. The positive momentum was further supported by domestic institutional buying and favorable global cues. However, Kotak Mahindra Bank closed 3.18% lower as the private sector lender's earnings failed to impress market investors, despite earning a net profit of ₹4,027 crore in Q3 FY26, marking a 13% increase from ₹3,552 crore in the same period last year.
