India's retail sector demonstrated resilience in August, recording 10% year-on-year growth across the country, according to the Retail Association of India's business survey. Building on July's strong recovery, the sector maintained steady momentum with stable consumer demand across key regions and categories, indicating strong industry preparation for the upcoming festive peak season. The growth pattern reflects a clear rebound trajectory from the low of 5% recorded in May, with consistent monthly improvement since then.
Regional sales growth remained consistent at 10% nationally, with West India leading the performance at 11% growth, outperforming other zones. South India followed closely at 10%, matching the national average, while East India and North India delivered stable growth trajectories with 8% and 9% growth respectively, as reported by the RAI survey. Mumbai's retail sector specifically recorded 10% year-on-year growth in August, contributing to the pan-India recovery.
Essential and routine categories emerged as the primary growth drivers, with quick service restaurants (QSR) peaking at 15% and food & grocery reaching 12% during the previous month. Lifestyle segments maintained steady expansion with apparel growing 10% and footwear at 8%, while consumer durables and electronics stabilised around 7%, following an earlier peak in April. The strong performance of essential categories like QSR and food & grocery reflects consumer preference for practical purchases during the current economic environment.
Growth had softened after April, when it stood at 7%, dipping to a low of 5% in May, but has shown consistent recovery since then. The sector climbed every month since April, with June registering 6%, July seeing 8%, and August achieving 10% growth, demonstrating a clear rebound trajectory. This sustained improvement indicates strengthening consumer confidence and effective retailer adaptation strategies.
Kumar Rajagopalan, Executive Director and CEO at Retailers Association of India (RAI), noted that while momentum softened following April, there has been a clear and encouraging rebound since July. August's strong performance serves as a promising prelude to the upcoming festive season, with focus now turning to precise execution and inventory planning to capture seasonal demand. The RAI maintains a measured and cautious approach in light of broader global macroeconomic conditions while India's internal consumption story remains resilient.
