India's e-commerce market is positioned for significant expansion, with ICICI Securities projecting growth to $174-214 billion by FY30 from nearly $70 billion in FY25. According to the latest ICICI Securities report, this projected growth is attributed to rising internet penetration, digital payments adoption, rural demand, and expansion of logistics infrastructure. The market leader Flipkart is estimated to hold 50-60% GMV share with 220-240 million monthly active users, supported by strength in smartphones, electronics, and appliances. Amazon India has retained a strong position in metros and FMCG categories, while Meesho continues expanding its presence in the value-commerce segment across smaller cities.
According to Bain & Co data reported by The Times of India, around half of India's online fashion and beauty shoppers are now Gen Z, representing a significant demographic shift in the e-commerce landscape. The cohort demonstrates substantial spending power, with Gen Z shoppers showing 1.5x the e-retail spend share on categories such as lifestyle, beauty, and electronics compared to other age groups. This spending pattern has contributed to the overall market growth, with the fashion and beauty e-commerce sector more than doubling over five years to $66 billion in gross merchandise value. The latest market data shows this trend continuing with Gen Z's share surging to 52% from about 30% two years ago at Amazon Fashion, as reported by The Times of India.
At Amazon Fashion, the Gen Z demographic shift has been particularly pronounced, with engagement across browsing, visits and transactions up two-and-half times YoY among Gen Z shoppers, as reported by Amazon Fashion director Nikhil Sinha. The platform's strategy reflects this demographic focus, with companies like Amazon, Nykaa, Myntra and Shein all sharpening their strategies around Gen Z's fast-evolving tastes and high-engagement behavior. This performance demonstrates the effectiveness of platforms in capturing and retaining Gen Z customers, with companies now investing heavily in understanding and catering to this demographic's specific tastes and shopping behaviors.
As reported by The Times of India, a significant chunk of the growth and engagement is now coming from tier 2 and tier 3 cities, with Gen Z shopper growth in these regions happening at twice the rate compared to the rest of the country. Cities including Indore, Lucknow, Chandigarh, Kochi, Nagpur, Jaipur and Surat now have access to the same global trends, creators and content as customers in metros like Mumbai or Bengaluru. This geographic expansion demonstrates the democratization of fashion and beauty e-commerce access across India's diverse urban landscape, with platforms like Amazon and Nykaa successfully expanding their reach to previously underserved markets.
