AlphaGrep Securities Pvt. has successfully raised ₹200 crore through secured, redeemable non-convertible debentures (NCDs) with a maturity of about one year and 10.5% coupon rate, as reported by CNBC TV18. The securities will be listed on the debt segment of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and represent a significant funding milestone for the high-frequency trading firm. This bond issuance follows the company's credit rating upgrade to CRISIL A+, strengthening its market position and investor confidence. The Mumbai-based firm is turning to the bond market for funding after the regulator tightened banks' exposure to trading firms that use their own capital.
The proceeds from the NCD issuance will be strategically deployed to strengthen AlphaGrep's artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) infrastructure and expand its retail-facing businesses, according to the company statement. AlphaGrep has recently launched three schemes in its quantitative mutual fund business and plans to introduce more schemes and other retail-focused fintech businesses. The company has expanded beyond proprietary trading into asset management across India, GIFT City, the UK and China, with its combined assets under management (AUM) currently exceeding $2 billion. AlphaGrep Securities serves as the sponsor of AlphaGrep Mutual Fund, while its subsidiary operates as the asset management company managing the fund's schemes.
The funding shift comes as Reserve Bank of India's curbs on bank exposure are pushing proprietary traders away from loans and toward bonds and commercial paper. As reported by Business Standard, this represents a significant adjustment for India's HFT firms as they navigate a tougher environment after years of rapid growth. The measure was the latest in a series of regulatory steps aimed at cooling the derivatives trading boom and protecting small investors. Regulatory restrictions have weighed on derivatives volumes even as competition among firms for quantitative and artificial-intelligence talent remains intense. The NCD issuance by AlphaGrep signals a broader trend among Indian speed traders seeking alternative funding sources in the current regulatory environment.
AlphaGrep relies on internally developed statistical models to identify trading opportunities and generate signals, according to Crisil Ratings. Trades are executed automatically according to predetermined parameters, backed by real-time automated risk-management system. The company has become a major force in India's derivatives markets through its high-frequency trading operations, making this NCD issuance particularly significant for the industry's funding landscape. The firm's expansion into asset management across multiple international markets demonstrates its diversification strategy beyond traditional proprietary trading operations.
