According to U.S consumer advocacy group Public Citizen, the Trump family's crypto ventures have caused investors at least $4.7 billion in unrealized losses since 2022. The latest analysis covers five Trump-related crypto products: Trump Digital Trading Cards, WLFI governance token, the TRUMP meme coin, USD1 stablecoin, and Trump Media & Technology Group's digital-asset treasury. The TRUMP memecoin accounted for the largest share with estimated losses of $3.2 billion, with about 1.6 million Solana wallets that purchased TRUMP now sitting in unrealized losses. As per Public Citizen's latest report, approximately one million of these wallets are currently in unrealized loss, highlighting the ongoing impact on investors. Additionally, Public Citizen found at least $1 billion in WLFI losses and about $450 million in unrealized Bitcoin losses from Trump Media's holdings. Despite these massive losses for investors, Trump and his family have become richer from crypto, with figures of at least $1.4 billion in income from crypto businesses during 2025.
The stark losses reported are already influencing trading behavior in celebrity-backed crypto assets. TRUMP currently trades at $0, with no significant volume reported in the past 24 hours, according to Nansen data. This price action reflects the market's response to the substantial unrealized losses across TRUMP holders. The token peaked at $73.43 the very day it was introduced and has since dropped significantly. The report notes that losses tied to investment in WLFI's stablecoin USD1 were relatively limited, but the bulk of the losses stem from memecoin investments. The broader crypto market continues to show mixed signals, which could further influence how investors view these celebrity-linked ventures, with the market's overall sentiment complicating recovery of these investments.
Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) has intensified her criticism of President Trump's cryptocurrency interests, arguing that his wealth is tied to an industry his administration is reshaping. "Trump owns ~$1 billion in cryptocurrency. Meanwhile, his administration shapes crypto policy. The President shouldn't be getting rich off his own policy decisions," Warren wrote on X. Warren did not explain how she calculated the roughly $1 billion figure, though Trump's 2025 financial disclosure showed his companies generated more than $1.4 billion from crypto ventures, including more than $520 million from World Liberty Financial token sales and over $635 million from Official Trump memecoin royalties. Trump has defended the earnings, stating "There's nothing illegal, there's nothing wrong with it" in July. The policy backdrop has sharpened Warren's criticism, as Trump last week hosted cryptocurrency executives at the White House and urged Congress to pass a "fair version" of the Clarity Act, which would establish clearer federal rules for digital assets.
The second-largest estimated loss comes from World Liberty Financial's WLFI governance token, with $1 billion in estimated investor losses. Public Citizen estimates there are 100 billion units of the token with 31.8 billion available for circulation. Trump reportedly holds 15.75 billion WLFI tokens, but such holdings are subject to restrictions that prevent selling them immediately. To date, total income of $557 million has been generated from WLFI token sales. The group also casts doubt on the degree of practical control that token holders have over World Liberty Financial's governance, raising concerns about democratic governance in the crypto ecosystem.
Despite rising losses, foreign investors continue to back Trump's crypto ventures. According to U.S media reports, WLFI's planned bank is mostly invested by the UAE's spymaster. Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed al Nahyan, the UAE's national security adviser, reportedly holds a 49% stake in WLTC Holdings. Previously, Tahnoon and other investors invested $500 million into World Liberty in a deal that saw the Trump family get $263 million. These arrangements between Trump and the UAE Sheikh have drawn scrutiny since Tahnoon is a foreign government official.
