According to reports from CoinDesk, Tether has frozen $344 million worth of USDT tokens on the Tron blockchain following reports of illicit activity. The freeze represents a significant action by the stablecoin issuer to prevent potential misuse of its tokens on the Tron network. This development highlights the ongoing challenges in monitoring stablecoin usage across different blockchain platforms. However, the latest reports reveal that this freeze was executed in coordination with U.S. law enforcement authorities, marking a more comprehensive enforcement action than initially reported.
The latest reports confirm that Tether coordinated directly with U.S. authorities to freeze the $344 million in USDT across two wallet addresses. The action followed information shared by several U.S. authorities about activity tied to unlawful conduct, with the freeze executed after the addresses were identified to stop further movement of funds. This coordination demonstrates Tether's proactive approach to working with law enforcement agencies, setting the company apart from reactive financial platforms. CEO Paolo Ardoino emphasized that "USD₮ is not a safe haven for illicit activity" and confirmed the company acts immediately when credible links to sanctioned entities are identified.
According to Tether's latest disclosure, the company now cooperates with over 340 law enforcement agencies across 65 countries worldwide. This extensive network has supported more than 2,300 cases globally to date, with over 1,200 cases tied directly to U.S. law enforcement efforts. Combined enforcement efforts have resulted in the freezing of more than $4.4 billion in assets, with more than $2.1 billion connected to U.S. authorities specifically. The company's proactive approach involves coordinating directly with investigators during active cases, not after funds disperse, reflecting a zero-tolerance stance toward criminal use of USDT.
As reported by Tether, the company follows OFAC guidelines regarding the Specially Designated Nationals list consistently, with any wallet linked to sanctions evasion or criminal networks facing immediate asset restriction. The company combines blockchain transparency with real-time monitoring to stop funds before they can move further, leveraging public blockchains that provide visible transaction trails that cash cannot offer. This transparency benefits both investigators and the broader digital asset industry while reinforcing trust in stablecoin infrastructure. The U.S. Department of Justice has previously acknowledged Tether's support in major enforcement actions, including cases resulting in the seizure of nearly $61 million tied to fraud and recovery of approximately $225 million connected to pig butchering schemes.
