Mysten Labs has unveiled Tessera, a Sui-based B2B settlement prototype that hides payment amounts while preserving controlled access for counterparties, regulators, and auditors. According to Sui's latest announcement, Tessera allows KYC-approved businesses to settle invoices using a confidential stablecoin, where payment amounts remain encrypted while counterparties can view transactions involving them. The prototype supports one-time transfers, recurring payments and disputed-payment arbitration, with Seal MPC granting scoped, temporary access to regulators, tax authorities, and dispute arbiters. Membership is gated through know-your-customer checks, with network operators able to onboard and fund members, freeze individual accounts, or pause the settlement network when necessary. Seal uses threshold encryption to distribute control of decryption keys across multiple parties, with policies determining who receives access, what information they can view, and how long that permission remains valid.
According to Sui's latest announcement, the blockchain plans to introduce ML-DSA-65 as a native signature scheme for regular accounts and SLH-DSA-SHA2-128s for high-value smart contract vaults, giving users an optional way to protect accounts against future quantum computing risks without replacing their recovery phrases or moving assets. The rollout comes as blockchain developers increasingly prepare for the possibility that future quantum computers could break today's public-key cryptography, with Sui noting that unlike traditional systems where public keys often remain hidden, blockchain accounts expose public keys onchain once transactions occur, allowing attackers to collect them years before practical quantum computers exist. The two standards have been accepted by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology, with Sui aiming to make quantum-safe vaults mainnet by 2026. Native ML-DSA-65 accounts could possibly make their way onto testnet at the end of the year, with native account authentication on mainnet planned for Q1 2027.
Despite the security upgrades, network activity metrics present a mixed picture for SUI adoption. According to DeFiLlama, the aggregate level of assets in stablecoins on Sui was roughly valued at $445 million, up by 2.15% on a 7-day basis. Volume on DEXes was up 4.78% at $157 million, while perpetuals volume fell by 17.49% on a weekly basis. These metrics suggest some activity growth but also indicate volatility in different trading segments. The current network activity status reflects the ongoing developmental nature of the quantum-resistance features, with these updates remaining underway but not yet translated to stronger SUI demand according to AMBCrypto.
The network has chosen two standardized signature schemes built on different mathematical foundations to reduce vulnerability to single cryptographic breakthroughs. For everyday user accounts, Sui will integrate ML-DSA-65, the Level 3 parameter set defined under NIST's FIPS 204 standard, directly into the protocol, citing a July 2026 incident where researchers used an AI model to reduce the effective security of the HAWK post-quantum signature candidate. Sui specifically rejected the cheaper Level 1 option after this AI model cut the effective key strength of another candidate quantum-resistant algorithm in half, with ML-DSA remaining unaffected but Sui choosing to adopt a standard with more margin than the minimum requirement. High-value assets will rely on SLH-DSA-SHA2-128s, the hash-based signature scheme standardized under FIPS 205, which will be implemented through Move smart contracts to maintain compatibility with future post-quantum standards without requiring core protocol changes. The transition to these new signature schemes will be opt-in but seamless, with users conserving the same seed phrases using a new derivation path.
Sui's announcement follows similar post-quantum security initiatives across the digital asset industry, including BNB Chain's successful testing of ML-DSA-44 transaction signatures in May, which showed signature sizes growing from 65 bytes to approximately 2,420 bytes, reducing transaction throughput by about 40% to 50%. The network cited research from Google Quantum AI published in March 2026, which indicated that recovering a private key from an exposed public key could eventually take minutes on a fault-tolerant quantum computer using fewer than 500,000 physical qubits.
