SMBC Nikko Securities and Nethermind have signed a memorandum of understanding with Uniswap Labs, Base and Nyx Foundation to develop a Japan-focused decentralized finance gateway. According to reports from crypto.news, the partnership was announced on October 2, with completion targeted for mid-2027. The project aims to provide Japanese investors with controlled access to decentralized finance markets through a liquidity-provisioning protocol and custom pools.
The gateway will utilize Uniswap v4 hooks to implement comprehensive regulatory controls including anti-money laundering, counterterrorism financing, and investor protection mechanisms. As reported by crypto.news, Uniswap Labs introduced Permissioned Pools in July using v4 hook standards that check issuer-managed allowlists before approved wallets can swap or provide liquidity. Base will support deployment and x402 integration, while Nethermind leads engineering, AI integration, and smart-contract security development.
The project will maintain ongoing communication with Japan's Financial Services Agency (FSA) regarding regulatory framework development. According to crypto.news, SMBC Nikko will lead regulatory discussions while contributing expertise in compliance, risk modeling, and portfolio management. The partners have not announced a public launch date or final customer-access model, with development progress to be shared with government authorities as discussions continue over appropriate DeFi regulations in Japan.
The initiative builds upon SMBC Nikko and Nethermind's March research partnership exploring secure DeFi market access. As reported by crypto.news, the October MoU expands the project from a two-company research structure into a five-party development team. The project timeline aligns with Japan's broader digital asset regulatory evolution, including the FSA's creation of a dedicated crypto and stablecoin division in August 2026.
