Securitize shares plunged more than 20% in after-hours trading Wednesday, reaching a record low following the company's disappointing second-quarter earnings report. The tokenization platform's stock decline reflects investor disappointment with the company's widening losses and revenue shortfall, highlighting the challenges of monetizing blockchain-based asset tokenization despite growing institutional interest in the sector.
Securitize reported a net loss of $21.7 million in the second quarter, significantly higher than the $0.15 loss analysts had expected, marking the company's first earnings report since going public last month. The company posted a $2.37 per-share loss, while adjusted EBITDA swung to a $5.5 million loss from a $1.8 million gain a year ago, missing Wall Street expectations. As reported by CoinDesk, the $21.7 million net loss represents a significant drain on the company's balance sheet, underscoring the path to profitability remains elusive even for a pioneer in bringing traditional assets like private credit and real estate onto blockchain rails.
Revenue declined 5% year-over-year to $14.4 million, missing analyst estimates of $20.6 million and falling short of the previous year's performance of $15.2 million. The 5% revenue decline could be attributed to slower deal flow and increased competition from other RWA platforms, according to analysts. CEO Carlos Domingo called the quarter "softer" while pointing to a stronger first half, where revenue remained 16% higher year-over-year including a record $19.5 million in the first quarter. The revenue shortfall signals that growth has stalled in an increasingly competitive market for tokenization platforms.
Despite the weaker financial results, Securitize's platform demonstrated strong growth in asset management and trading activity. According to the company's latest release, average tokenized assets under management reached a record $4.3 billion, up 16% from a year earlier, while the company's fund-services arm oversaw 663 active funds and $24.3 billion in assets under administration. The company added approximately $1 billion in AUM during the quarter and now manages about $5 billion onchain, with more than seven assets on its platform each having at least $100 million in AUM. Transaction activity also surged, with aggregate transaction volume reaching $5.3 billion, representing a 147% year-over-year increase.
Securitize maintains key strategic partnerships that position it at the center of Wall Street's push to bring securities on-chain, though the company's results serve as a reality check for the broader tokenization sector. The company provides infrastructure for asset managers and works with the New York Stock Exchange on tokenized securities trading infrastructure, while its partnership with market-leading transfer agent Computershare enables tokenized shares for U.S. issuers. The company has expanded its regulatory footprint since going public, with Securitize Capital becoming an SEC registered investment adviser in July, adding to its broker dealer, transfer agent and alternative trading system operations. However, the results highlight the financial challenges of tokenization platforms despite growing institutional interest, with the company's losses potentially prompting increased scrutiny of similar companies and a focus on sustainable revenue models.
