Ripple CTO David Schwartz, known on X as JoelKatz, has described cryptocurrency as a 'once-in-a-generation' opportunity to accumulate wealth, while simultaneously reducing his personal exposure to digital assets. According to reports from CoinDesk, Schwartz has shifted most of his personal wealth out of digital assets to achieve better sleep at night, despite his bullish outlook on the broader crypto market. His cautious approach stands in contrast to current market dynamics, where Bitcoin has surpassed $81,000 during Asian trading hours, marking its highest level since late January.
Schwartz defended his controversial decision to sell Ethereum (ETH) at just $1.05, long before its dramatic run to approximately $2,368. As reported by CoinDesk, he stated he never believed Ethereum had even a 1% chance of reaching its current price level. "If I had thought there was a 1% chance of it hitting $2,368, I would not have sold it for $1.05. I'm still not sure the odds of that happening really were more than 1% at the time," Schwartz explained. He argued that his preference for stable outcomes over speculative bets has guided most of his investing decisions, even as current market conditions show Ether, Solana, and XRP experiencing minor fluctuations while traders position for continued upside through strategic call options.
Despite reducing his crypto exposure, Schwartz maintains more than one million XRP holdings, which are still worth several million dollars depending on market conditions. According to CoinDesk reports, he has reduced his XRP holdings and limited exposure to digital assets outside of his Ripple equity position. The Ripple co-founder identified himself as 'not the diamond hands guy' but rather a 'smart, sensible investment guy' who accepts the cost of caution in his investment approach. His approach comes as options traders position for further gains through call ratio strategies, despite ongoing geopolitical volatility involving U.S.-Iran tensions and oil price movements.
Schwartz acknowledged that he could 'easily' have joined the billionaire ranks had he held more crypto for longer periods, but argued the tradeoff was worth it. As reported by CoinDesk, he framed the broader crypto opportunity as historic while accepting he is unlikely to capture much of it. His remarks come at a time when XRP investors are closely monitoring signals from Ripple's leadership, with his cautious approach potentially unsettling holders banking on a generational bull run. The current market environment shows a shift to positive sentiment if the current breakout persists, with traders utilizing call ratio strategies to hedge and bet on further price growth.
