Polymarket has moved its primary blockchain indexing infrastructure in-house using the Rust-based rindexer tool, cutting the time needed to surface onchain events by as much as 28 seconds. According to reports from Odaily Planet Daily, the new system can surface onchain events up to 14 blocks faster, representing a significant improvement in data latency. Polymarket Vice President of Engineering Josh Stevens stated that the platform built the new system internally using rindexer, an open-source indexing tool designed to index data within 0 to 10 milliseconds of a block being broadcast. The system's performance approaches real-time performance, with the refresh speed for trades, positions, and balances expected to be further improved.
Rindexer is an open-source EVM indexing tool built in Rust that's compatible with EVM chains and designed to let developers index blockchain events through a YAML configuration. As reported by crypto.news, the software provides a GraphQL API for querying indexed data and can be extended for more complex indexing pipelines. Stevens explained that the change means trades, user positions and balances can update more quickly as blockchain events reach Polymarket's systems, with the platform now seeing onchain data events up to 14 blocks faster than before. The system's ability to complete indexing within 0 to 10 milliseconds after block broadcast represents a significant advancement in blockchain data processing speed.
Despite the infrastructure change, Goldsky will remain as a backup while Polymarket primarily operates its own indexing stack. According to crypto.news, Goldsky previously handled important parts of the platform's real-time blockchain data infrastructure, with its subgraphs supplying real-time indexing and its Mirror product connecting onchain activity with offchain information. The data infrastructure provider's case study noted that Polymarket used these systems to combine trades with information such as usernames and comments, while dashboard features including recent activity, top holders and leaderboards relied on the resulting data pipelines.
The indexing change comes as Polymarket has been building more of the infrastructure supporting its trading products. As reported by crypto.news, in September, the company launched perpetual futures for eligible international users across an initial group of 10 markets covering crypto assets, equity indices and commodities, offering leverage of up to 20 times. The initial lineup includes Bitcoin, Ether, Solana and Hyperliquid alongside gold, silver, oil and U.S. equity indices, expanding the platform beyond event contracts. In April, Polymarket introduced onchain surveillance through a partnership with Chainalysis to monitor trading activity for possible insider trading and market manipulation.
