Mt. Gox has pushed back its creditor repayment deadline from October 31, 2026, to October 31, 2027, after receiving court approval to give creditors more time to complete the procedures required to receive their funds. According to an October 16 notice from rehabilitation trustee Nobuaki Kobayashi, the deadline was moved because many creditors have yet to receive their repayments due to incomplete procedures or problems encountered during the distribution process. The trustee stated that many creditors have not completed the necessary procedures and that others ran into problems during the process, necessitating the extension. As reported by the crypto industry on October 19, the schedule was adjusted to reflect the practical conditions needed to complete repayments to creditors.
The trustee reported that Base Repayment, Early Lump-Sum Repayment and Intermediate Repayment have largely been completed for creditors who submitted the required information and encountered no issues. However, a considerable number of creditors remain unpaid, including those who have completed the necessary steps but experienced problems during processing. The court-approved extension gives the rehabilitation trustee another 12 months to continue distributions where repayment remains reasonably practicable. As reported by Decrypt, the September 2023 move had already shifted the deadline from October 2023 to October 2024, citing delays in checking creditor information and working with exchanges. According to materials released on March 27, the trustee had distributed Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash to about 19,500 creditors, with approximately 34,000 Bitcoin still due to be distributed in stages to creditors who have yet to be repaid.
This marks the fourth consecutive postponement since the original October 2023 target, following previous delays in October 2024, October 2025, and now October 2026. As reported by crypto.news, the 2025 announcement stated that approximately 19,500 creditors had received payments, while others remained unpaid due to incomplete procedures or processing difficulties. Repayments began in July 2024 through designated cryptocurrency exchanges including Kraken and Bitstamp, with Kraken confirming creditor fund receipt on July 16, 2024. The trustee noted that the date was pushed back several times since the 2014 collapse, with the latest extension being announced on October 16, 2026. Differences in repayment methods and procedures for each creditor have prolonged the overall payout process.
Despite earlier distributions, Mt. Gox continued to hold substantial Bitcoin reserves in 2026. According to blockchain data from Arkham Intelligence, the exchange transferred 10,422 BTC worth approximately $739 million on June 2, involving a transfer of 10,306 BTC from cold storage to an unmarked address. Mt. Gox still held more than 34,500 BTC at the time of the June report, with the rehabilitation process continuing under the previous October 2026 deadline. Decrypt's October 2025 article cited third-party estimates of approximately 34,689 BTC remaining, though the trustee has not provided current figures on their official website. The repayment plan disclosed in September 2023 included about 142,000 Bitcoin, about 143,000 Bitcoin Cash and 69 billion yen in cash.
