THORChain's RUNE token surged by more than 26% in the past 24 hours, ranking first among all gainers in the top 200 cryptos by market cap. According to AMBCrypto reports, the rally was driven by the THORChain v3.20 upgrade going live on August 26, 2026, which successfully expanded the network's addressable market by bringing privacy users to direct crypto connections. The upgrade allows swapping Monero (XMR) and Zcash (ZEC) for Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and stablecoins, representing a significant expansion from the previous limited privacy features. RUNE's daily trading volume matched the price surge with a 3x increase, recording over $20 million, though it remained relatively low compared to the token's market cap.
The v3.20 update also reactivates the node rotation mechanism (churn) after nearly two months of suspension, addressing structural deficiencies in THORChain's economic model. The update introduces the Protocol Owned Liquidity (POL) mechanism, which channels a percentage of system revenue through governance parameters to liquidity pools requiring greater depth. Additionally, Zcash (ZEC) support will be enabled with full activation expected during the first week following launch. The Stable Reserve function is introduced as an experimental concept, allowing direct exchanges of stable tokens without using native asset RUNE as an intermediary, aiming to reduce price slippage losses and improve competitiveness against other DeFi platforms. As per AMBCrypto, the upgrade comes three months after an attacker exploited THORChain for over $10 million across BTC, ETH, and BSC, with the chain averaging $7 million in daily BTC swaps and $10 million in daily ETH swaps according to DefiLlama data.
The upgrade triggered a significant short liquidation event, with RUNE short positions worth 10x those of longs being wiped out according to CoinGlass data. The surge in daily buying volume created a cascade effect that liquidated perpetual short orders, demonstrating the immediate market impact of the privacy upgrade. The rally was further supported by a stronger crypto market and altcoins gaining ground, creating favorable conditions for THORChain's privacy-focused features. As reported by AMBCrypto, the upgrade has expanded THORChain's addressable market as it brings privacy users to direct crypto connections, potentially increasing the chain's swap volume and user base significantly.
From a technical perspective, RUNE's 200-day EMA shows the price action has turned bullish on a long-term daily scale, according to AMBCrypto analysis. However, RUNE was still trading below the $0.65 zone, which was the last lower high of the bearish trend, indicating that while the market structure has shifted from EMA perspective, it has yet to confirm by flipping the $0.65 resistance into support. Bulls tested the $0.65 supply zone but met instant rejection, with it remaining unclear if they have the momentum to breach this resistance level. However, the CVD showed bulls were positioning with 1.78 million RUNE bought on Binance, while sentiment was at 80, indicating the crowd was convinced the altcoin rally may be sustainable. The analysis suggests that while the rally may be sentiment-driven, if the market structure is shifting, RUNE may be positioning for more significant gains.
The integration of Monero in THORChain's v3.20 represents a significant development for privacy-focused DeFi infrastructure, offering users KYC-free access to Monero trading through a decentralized platform. The upgrade addresses the structural deficiencies that emerged after THORChain's month-long halt following a hack that resulted in approximately ₹10 million in losses. The trend toward no-registration exchanges reflects growing user demand for privacy-focused cryptocurrency transactions as surveillance increases globally, with Monero's tail emission of 0.6 XMR per block providing predictable, low inflation and perpetual miner incentives ensuring network security without hard supply caps. The current rally demonstrates market confidence in THORChain's ability to successfully implement privacy features and expand its user base in the competitive DeFi landscape.
