KB Securities has signed a three-party agreement with Securitize and the Optimism Foundation to develop tokenized financial products for Korean institutional investors, starting with a planned tokenized bond on OP Mainnet. According to the company's September 23 release shared with crypto.news, the memorandum of understanding covers the development and distribution of tokenized securities in South Korea. Under the proposed arrangement, KB Securities would bring its institutional client base and securities issuance and distribution experience, while Securitize would provide tokenization infrastructure and Optimism would provide blockchain technology. The collaboration will target a tokenized bond as the first product, with plans to expand to tokenized equities and additional financial products in the future, with the agreement combining KB Securities' capital-market capabilities with Securitize's regulated digital securities infrastructure and Optimism's blockchain network.
The companies plan to begin with a tokenized money market fund and a fund tied to a KB Asset Management strategy, allowing Korean institutions to obtain on-chain versions of their existing investments. As reported by crypto.news, the bond is planned for OP Mainnet, the Optimism network selected for the first product. KB Securities also intends to develop a tokenized fund based on one of KB Asset Management's flagship strategies, though the release did not name the strategy or give a launch date for either product. Later stages could include tokenized stocks, American depositary receipts, corporate bonds and Korean government bonds as the country's rules permit. The three parties also plan to explore tokenized equities and ADRs, corporate bonds, and Korean government bonds, with institutional adoption expected to grow as the partners expand their product offerings.
The partnership provides Optimism with an opportunity to move from being a Layer 1 blockchain infrastructure into Korea's institutional securities pipeline. According to AMBCrypto reports, OP Mainnet can process settlements with low cost, approximately two-second block times and is compatible with the Ethereum protocol. This allows Securitize to be responsible for the tokenization and management of these new digital asset offerings, enabling KB Securities to launch new product offerings that can be settled via an existing transaction rail. The initial step will include a proposed issuance by a money market fund, with the larger potential of this project depending on regulatory agencies in South Korea allowing securitizations for bonds and equities.
The initial focus on tokenized bonds puts the proposed products close to the first stage of South Korea's tokenized securities framework. According to crypto.news coverage, in its three-stage tokenization roadmap, the Financial Services Commission said selected privately pooled money market funds and institutional bonds would be among the products eligible when amended securities rules take effect on February 4, 2027. The Financial Services Commission has stated its policy direction will cover the phased tokenization of traditional securities including stocks, bonds and funds, with amended legislation scheduled to take effect in February 2027.
CEO Kang Jin-doo stated that the agreement would bring together the companies' respective capabilities for products serving domestic institutional investors. The Sep 23 announcement does not give a revenue estimate, investment amount or other financial terms for the proposed collaboration. Beyond the planned tokenized bond, KB Securities said any move into tokenized stocks, depositary receipts or bonds would depend on how Korea's securities framework develops. According to AMBCrypto, institutional adoption will determine whether KB Securities' tokenized funds create lasting activity on OP Mainnet, with current RWA Assets Under Management sitting near $39 million and Securitize holding about $26 million. The partnership comes as South Korea moves toward a formal regulatory framework for tokenized securities, with this collaboration marking a significant shift in traditional finance adopting blockchain technology.
