Hyperliquid (HYPE) experienced a sharp decline of 12% on the day following the announcement of a massive token unlock scheduled for June 6. According to 99Bitcoins, the token is currently trading around $59 following a +36% pump over the past months that took it to new all-time highs, including a current record of $75.48. The upcoming unlock represents a $689.7 million release, accounting for nearly 71% of all tokens unlocking during the week, with the cumulative size of these releases now large enough that stakers, traders, and long-term holders cannot afford to treat them as background noise. Earlier tranches have topped $300 million in notional value, and with over 61% of the total 1 billion HYPE supply still locked as of mid-2026, the pipeline of future releases extends through 2027.
Hyperion DeFi (NASDAQ: HYPD), the first U.S. publicly listed Hyperliquid treasury company, is unwinding two of its largest HYPE token deployment agreements following the USDH stablecoin's announced sunset. According to The Block, the company agreed with Felix Foundation to wind down a HYPE Asset Use Service (HAUS) agreement supporting Felix's HIP-3 perpetual futures markets, with Hyperion unstaking 500,000 HYPE on June 22 and returning all remaining payments and tokens by June 29. Separately, Native Markets terminated its Temporary Use Agreement effective June 18, returning 300,000 HYPE on June 3. Assets associated with the Felix arrangement were valued at approximately $18.3 million as of March 31, while those tied to Native Markets were valued at approximately $10.4 million. The unwinds follow Native Markets' May 14 announcement that it would cease supporting USDH and allow the brand assets to be purchased by Coinbase, which plans to deploy USDC as the aligned quote asset on Hyperliquid.
The technical outlook for HYPE has deteriorated significantly with momentum indicators showing their weakest position since the token's breakout rally began. As reported by crypto.news, the daily MACD has produced its first bearish crossover since the rally accelerated in May, while the histogram has turned negative. The Relative Strength Index has dropped from overbought territory above 70 to roughly 54, indicating buyers have lost control of short-term momentum. HYPE is currently trading between the 0.786 retracement level near $63.9 and the 0.618 level near $54.6, with a breakdown below the latter potentially exposing the midpoint support near $48.1 and bringing the psychologically important $50 level into view. From a technical perspective, HYPE's critical support level resides at $59–$60, while a decisive break above the $83–$95 resistance band would be required to reestablish the upward trajectory toward $110–$130.
Despite the selloff and upcoming unlock, institutional capital continues flowing into HYPE through strategic accumulation. According to crypto.news, wallets linked to venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz accumulated an additional 224,100 HYPE tokens worth more than $15 million during the recent decline. This latest purchase increased a16z-linked holdings to roughly 6.90 million HYPE tokens acquired in 2026, representing an estimated position worth more than $322 million. The buying activity contrasts sharply with the profit-taking seen from traders and whales near the highs, providing fundamental support despite the technical weakness. Additionally, Grayscale's Hyperliquid ETF, designated as HYPG, is preparing to launch with a 0.29% management fee, while previously launched ETFs THYP and BHYP have collectively attracted $141 million in aggregate net inflows. However, the unlock's impact on staking rewards presents challenges, as unlocked tokens could compress individual APR unless fee revenue grows, though modest yield compression is more likely given consistent fee revenue and the platform's growing institutional profile.
The current market structure presents several critical risk zones for HYPE's recovery amid the upcoming unlock. As reported by crypto.news, CoinGlass liquidation heatmaps identify dense concentrations of leveraged positions between $60 and $64, while larger liquidity pools sit around $58 and below. A decisive move through these levels could trigger another round of forced selling and increase downside volatility. The unlock's impact on staking rewards is particularly significant, as on Hyperliquid's L1 Mainnet, staking yield mainly comes from trading fees on HyperCore, which manages up to 200,000 orders per second. Despite near-term headwinds, Hyperliquid's underlying business metrics continued strengthening with May perpetual futures trading volume achieving a landmark 6.63% share of aggregate global centralized exchange perpetual volume, while the platform maintains strong trading volume and deep liquidity often between $500M–$1B in TVL.
