London-based asset management platform HANetf has launched what it describes as the world's first currency-hedged cryptocurrency exchange-traded commodities (ETCs), offering bitcoin exposure while limiting the effect of U.S. dollar movements. According to HANetf's announcement, these products bring a new currency-hedged structure to the European crypto ETC market. The platform has listed GBTC on the London Stock Exchange and EBTC on Frankfurt-based Xetra and Euronext Paris, with multinational bank HSBC providing the currency hedging services. As reported by HANetf, these products are the world's first currency-hedged crypto ETCs and introduce a new structure to the European crypto ETC market.
The products address a fundamental challenge in cryptocurrency investing: bitcoin's almost universal denomination in U.S. dollars. As reported by HANetf, this means investors in markets like Europe and elsewhere take on dollar exposure when investing in BTC. The GBTC provides pound sterling hedging while the EBTC offers euro hedging, allowing European investors to gain bitcoin exposure without worrying about exchange-rate risks that could erode their returns. Unlike in the U.S., ETFs in the European Union and U.K. must hold a diversified basket of assets, making ETCs the preferred vehicle for single-commodity exposure. The products are specifically designed to minimize foreign-exchange risk alongside crypto exposure for European investors.
HANetf is specifically targeting long-term bitcoin investors concerned about potential dollar weakness. The products are designed to offer cryptocurrency exposure without requiring investors to manage custody directly. According to the announcement, currency-hedged gold ETCs represent a $23 billion asset class, approximately 13% of the gold ETC market in Europe, with HANetf already providing products that hedge the euro, pound and Swiss franc. These products represent the latest examples of cryptocurrency exchange-traded products (ETPs) giving investors exposure to crypto without the worry of managing custody of the assets themselves. The launch also reflects broader demand for digital-asset products that resemble traditional financial market instruments and reduce the operational burden of holding crypto directly.
The launch addresses growing demand from investors more accustomed to traditional financial assets who may demand products and services that replicate what they use in traditional finance (TradFi). As reported by HANetf, cryptocurrency exchange-traded products (ETPs) are a predominant vehicle for attracting investors to digital assets, providing exposure to crypto without the complexity of managing custody directly. The products represent a significant development in making cryptocurrency investment more accessible to European investors who prefer traditional investment structures. Cryptocurrency exchange-traded products, including ETFs, ETCs and exchange-traded notes, remain a key route for investors seeking regulated exposure to digital assets without managing custody themselves.
