
Zakura has released an open-source cryptography toolkit called Zakura Common on August 31 that promises to revolutionize Zcash transaction performance. The toolkit replaces several cryptographic components used by wallets and full nodes, with developers claiming it can reduce private transaction construction time from over three seconds to below 200 milliseconds. According to Zakura, mobile proof generation has improved more than 14 times, while desktop performance shows gains exceeding five times overall. The software operates under dual MIT and Apache 2.0 licenses, allowing wallet and node developers to integrate the libraries without waiting for a coordinated network upgrade.
Beyond transaction construction, Zakura Common delivers significant improvements across multiple Zcash operations. Sinsemilla hashing acceleration exceeds 21 times, which is crucial for Zcash's Orchard shielded protocol cryptographic commitments. Trial decryption improved by more than 1.5 times, benefiting wallets scanning blockchain data to identify user transactions. The toolkit also delivers fourfold to eightfold gains in zk-SNARK verification, enabling full nodes to validate transactions sooner and reduce block-processing delays. As Zcash co-founder Sean Bowe noted, "Shielded wallets that use Zakura Common, and full nodes like Zakura itself, all benefit."
Zakura Common specifically addresses the wallet-side bottleneck that creates delays in shielded Zcash transactions. Before payments can be broadcast, user wallets must perform substantial cryptographic work to prove that hidden transactions follow network rules, which happens on the device before blockchain processing begins. According to Zakura, wallets using the new libraries should sync faster, while full nodes running Zakura are expected to benefit from faster transaction checks, reduced orphan rates and faster transaction propagation. The performance figures represent Zakura's own benchmarks, with the team targeting more than 50,000 private transactions per second - roughly the scale of major card networks - compared with a described ceiling of about one transaction per second for today's wallet software.
According to Grayscale Research, Zcash (ZEC) has the potential to capture significant market share from Bitcoin (BTC) despite currently holding only 1% of Bitcoin's market value. As reported by Grayscale, Bitcoin controls 93% of the currencies sector by market capitalization, with Bitcoin trading near $78,645 and maintaining a market cap of roughly $1.58 trillion. In contrast, ZEC trades near $829 with a market value of about $13.3 billion, ranking it 12th overall in the crypto market. Recent market reaction shows ZEC initially rose about 5% following the Zakura Common announcement, trading near $839 before settling around $829 on August 31, though it was down Monday morning alongside a broader market pullback.
Wallet developers can immediately adopt Zakura Common without requiring coordinated network upgrades. Vizor Wallet is among the first confirmed adopters, with Zakura version 1.3.0 already moving to the new cryptography stack. Other wallets must integrate and test the libraries before their users receive performance gains, with adoption depending on individual development schedules rather than a single network activation date. The update arrives as Zcash wallet development becomes more distributed, with former Electric Coin Company developers forming CashZ in January to continue work based on Zashi wallet code. Previous integrations include ShapeShift's wallet addition of Zcash privacy support across its non-custodial platform. Zakura's stated long-term target of more than 50,000 private transactions per second aligns with the proposed NU7 upgrade that could reduce Zcash block times to about 25 seconds.
