Ethereum's native token ether currently trades at $2,725, representing a 1% gain over 24 hours, while bitcoin sits at $86,300, up 1.4% during the same period. According to CoinGecko data, ether's strong 70% price surge in Q3 significantly outpaced bitcoin's 42% gain during the same period. However, the latest analysis reveals that ether's market liquidity has deteriorated substantially compared to bitcoin, with the token's median daily market depth falling to just 35% to 45% of bitcoin's between July 6 and September 30, representing a stark decline from at least 60% in the same period last year.
Market depth, measured as the total dollar value of buy and sell orders within specific price ranges, provides crucial insights into trading liquidity. Ether maintained $13 million to $14 million in depth within 0.15% of its market price during the study period, with CoinGecko analysis across eight major centralized exchanges showing this as the median depth. While this represents a significant decline from previous levels, ether remains relatively liquid at this trading range, with most exchanges maintaining over $1 million in depth on each side. The thinning market depth suggests that large orders can quickly consume available liquidity, potentially causing price movements that traders may find difficult to manage.
The liquidity challenges extend beyond ether to other major cryptocurrencies. Solana's SOL token, ether's main competitor, experienced similar liquidity deterioration, with depth within 2% of the market price falling from approximately $28 million on each side last year to around $20 million this year. Meanwhile, XRP maintained steady liquidity at approximately $30 million in total depth, though its order books showed a bullish bias with $18 million in bids against $14 million in asks. Despite XRP's market cap being about 40% larger than SOL's, it demonstrates less depth within 2% of the price due to SOL's higher trading volume.
Recent macroeconomic developments have highlighted the critical role of liquidity in cryptocurrency markets. The Federal Reserve's policy expectations have undergone significant shifts, with October hike odds collapsing from around 70% to roughly 14% following disappointing jobs data. While this macro news was unambiguously positive for crypto markets, bitcoin struggled to maintain gains above $87,000 despite the favorable conditions. The inability of major cryptocurrencies to hold gains despite positive macroeconomic news demonstrates the ongoing challenges of liquidity constraints in digital asset markets, even when traditional risk-off assets like bonds and gold typically benefit from such policy shifts. For ether specifically, the liquidity gap matters most when volatility forces larger orders through thinner books, with price levels now determining whether its recovery can attract follow-through.
