Ethereum (ETH) traded near $2,496 at press time after a modest drop in the past 24 hours but a 7.1% decline over the past week. According to BeInCrypto and Farside Investors fund-flow data, U.S. spot Ether ETFs recorded $542 million in net outflows for the past week, marking their worst weekly performance since January when outflows hit $611 million across five trading days. The latest data shows $201.9 million in outflows on October 6, followed by $160.9 million on October 7, with $72.5 million additional withdrawals on October 8. BlackRock's iShares Ethereum Trust (ETHA) accounted for nearly the entire redemption, withdrawing $201.89 million alone, while Bitcoin ETFs drew $21.13 million in net inflows. Since September 29, these funds have shed about $697 million, erasing most of the $850.8 million they drew in the seven sessions before. This extended outflow streak has become the clearest driver of Ethereum's recent price action, with ETH underperforming Bitcoin as institutional money favors the leading asset.
Despite the institutional capital retreat, derivatives traders are piling into bearish bets on Ethereum. According to BeInCrypto data, $5 billion in Ethereum shorts now sit above the price compared to $1.53 billion in longs, creating a significant imbalance in the derivatives market. Analyst Ted Pillows noted that "most of the ETH downside liquidity has been taken out for now," but warned that weakening spot demand remains a concern for further correction. The $5 billion in shorts versus $1.53 billion in longs ratio represents a dramatic shift in market positioning, with short sellers now heavily positioned overhead. Forced closures of these short positions could potentially trigger a short squeeze, pushing prices higher, though the current weakening spot demand suggests continued downside pressure.
Adding to the selling pressure, the Ethereum Foundation itself has contributed to the bearish sentiment through recent transactions. As reported by AMBCrypto, two wallets associated with the Foundation deposited 4,393 ETH worth $11.13 million into Kraken around five hours ago. The significance of these transactions lies in the timing, as these wallets received 59,751 ETH from the Foundation about 10 years ago when ETH was trading at just $0.90. This represents a significant profit-taking opportunity for the Foundation, with the current sale price of $11.13 million representing a substantial markup from their original investment. The Foundation's decision to sell at current levels, despite holding the asset for nearly a decade, sends a clear signal to the market about their risk assessment and potential concerns about near-term ETH price performance.
Ethereum's technical indicators continue to flash bearish signals despite recent recovery attempts. The daily Supertrend has turned red at $2,764.28, with Ethereum trading nearly 10% below this resistance level at approximately $2,496. The 4-hour Bollinger midpoint stands at $2,569, representing the next recovery hurdle, while the 4-hour Chaikin Money Flow remains negative at -0.10, indicating persistent selling pressure. TradingView's Average Directional Index stands at 35.48, above the 25 threshold for established trends, though it has declined from September highs. The $2,500 level now represents the first critical resistance that buyers must reclaim, with failure to do so leaving the bounce vulnerable to further downside pressure. The narrowing Bollinger bands hint at low volatility and price consolidation, suggesting potential for sideways movement in the near term.
A recovery back above $2,500 would require sustained positive ETF flows and a turn in the fund-flow trend, while continued daily redemptions would keep pressure on the $2,450-$2,500 support band. The key question now is whether Open Interest stabilizes as ETH prices move or continues declining, which could help determine whether traders are rebuilding conviction or becoming more cautious. Analyst Ella identified $2,500 as the first level buyers need to reclaim, describing the move from approximately $2,700 to the recent low near $2,400 as a decline of close to 11%. A single day of positive Ether ETF flows, especially if ETHA flips to inflows, would break the nine-session streak and hand Ether a concrete catalyst to retake the level. The bull case scenario involves support holding, followed by a reclaim of $2,700 and a test of $2,800, while the base case anticipates choppy trade between roughly $2,450-$2,700 while traders await macro catalysts. The bear case, and near-term invalidation of the rebound, is a decisive loss of $2,450, exposing lower support levels and increasing pressure on buyers.
