Ethereum is trading just below the $2,000 psychological resistance level, with the 24-hour range running between $1,861.59 and $1,880.32, a tight band that signals the market is coiling before its next directional decision. According to crypto.news, the token has moved sideways since falling from its late-July peak near $1,975. The daily chart shows ETH trading below its 20-day simple moving average at $1,887.53, with the 100-day SMA at $1,918.22 creating another resistance level, while the 200-day SMA remains higher at $2,074.86. The Bull Bear Power indicator has slipped to minus 14.96, suggesting sellers retain a small advantage, though the indicator remains far above the deeply negative levels recorded during the June decline. The Fear and Greed Index sits at 23, extreme fear, a reading that has historically preceded either a flush or a sharp relief rally. The June low around $1,550 to $1,600 is the most important level on this chart right now, being the floor where price capitulated and bounced, with the recovery since then bringing ETH back to the $1,900 zone, which was the dotted support line from the February consolidation period.
The technical test comes as Ethereum developers debate EIP-8361, a draft proposal designed to taper consensus-layer issuance as the share of staked ETH increases. The proposal would burn a progressively larger share of validator rewards, reaching a 100% burn rate at a 50% staking ratio, with all newly issued consensus rewards burned instead of paid to validators. Six authors, including Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake, submitted the draft on August 4, though the proposal remains under discussion and has not been approved for a network upgrade. Aave founder Stani Kulechov has emerged as the most vocal opponent, arguing that the proposal would "make ETH less viable as an asset and restrict its potential." As Kulechov stated, "This just makes ETH less viable as an asset and restricts its potential. I hope this proposal doesn't move forward; otherwise, we see lot of people moving their interest in other networks." Mike Sligadze, CEO of EtherFi, echoed similar concerns, wondering "how the negligible inflation cut will boost ETH value at the expense of the DeFi ecosystem." Seven of the top 10 DeFi protocols will face a capital exodus, according to Sligadze, with Fidelity's Director of Research Lorenzo Valente noting that protocols like Aave, Morpho, Pendle, and Ethena that depend on ETH credit markets would be affected. The proposal has divided members of the Ethereum ecosystem, with critics claiming it would kill ETH credit markets and drive stakers to other chains.
Recent institutional activity has provided strong support for Ethereum's bullish outlook, with US Spot Ethereum ETFs recording $53.75 million in net inflows on August 4, demonstrating renewed institutional confidence in the cryptocurrency. According to AMBCrypto, this investor appetite could help usher ETH back above $2,000. However, market intelligence division Novaque Research observed that Ethereum showed "a widening gap between supply restraint and economic demand," with falling exchange reserves pointing to lower immediately available supply and a trend often associated with accumulation rather than imminent selling. Around 41.4 million ETH, or 34% of the supply, has been staked, highlighting the supply constraint for the altcoin. At the same time, Coinbase Premium has been negative since May, showing U.S. investors primarily selling and completely unwilling to pay a premium to buy ETH. The funding rates were positive, but the 7-day moving average reflected a downward trend over the past month, reminiscent of the falling funding rate moving average in March. As prices climbed higher, the rates briefly turned negative, marking a local top for Ethereum around the $2.4k mark.
The 4-hour chart places Ethereum near the upper boundary of a descending channel that has guided price lower since the July 27 peak near $1,975. The immediate breakout area sits between $1,875 and $1,885, with a 4-hour close above the channel and the daily 20-day SMA giving buyers an opportunity to retest $1,900. Momentum remains weak rather than decisively bearish, with the Aroon Up reading at 14.29% and Aroon Down at 0%, indicating that neither side has established a strong short-term trend. Chaikin Money Flow is slightly negative at minus 0.02, pointing to modest net selling pressure and showing that ETH has yet to attract the sustained capital inflows needed for a clean breakout. CoinGlass' one-week liquidation heatmap shows liquidity has accumulated around $1,890 to $1,905, with a much larger concentration near $1,940. A move through $1,940 would open the way toward $1,975 and $2,000, though the daily 100-day SMA at $1,918 must first be reclaimed for the bullish setup to gain credibility. Failure to clear the channel could send Ethereum back toward $1,850, with the 50-day SMA around $1,788 and the psychological $1,800 level forming the main support zone.
Analysts are presenting increasingly bullish long-term forecasts for Ethereum's price potential despite current market challenges. CrediBULL Crypto maintains a target of $20,000 over the long term, a forecast that was first shared three weeks ago when ETH traded near $1,500 and many believed the market had peaked. The analyst emphasizes that it's not too late for investors to prepare if the long-term trend continues. Ethereum continues to hold its position as one of the biggest networks for stablecoins, decentralized finance, and tokenized real-world assets, activities that consistently bring users and capital to the network. Stablecoins on Ethereum have crossed $158 billion, representing payments, remittances and institutional settlement running across the network daily. However, analysts note that token-level value accrual is under real debate as activity shifts to Layer-2 networks and base-layer fees fall, keeping ETH a higher-beta, harder-to-reprice bet than many expected earlier in the cycle. The $2,000 level is both a psychological barrier and a major technical pivot, with a daily close above it giving buyers a clearer path toward $2,125, the next Murrey Math resistance. For US investors, Ethereum's ability to reclaim $2,000 will depend more on spot demand, broader risk appetite and institutional flows than on EIP-8361 alone, as the proposal may shape ETH's longer-term issuance policy but price must first escape its short-term descending channel.
