This represents a major step forward from the previous One Trillion Dollar Security Initiative commitment, now operationalized with dedicated infrastructure and support systems. Clear Signing's architecture has three core components: a unified JSON-based description format tied to ERC-7730 that dApp developers use to annotate their contracts with human-readable explanations of each function call and parameter. As reported by The Block, the public registry stores those descriptions, versioned and linked to deployed contract addresses so wallets can pull the relevant metadata at signing time. An independent verification and auditing layer allows third parties to review and attest to the accuracy of a contract's descriptions, creating a trust chain between the dApp developer's intent and what the wallet ultimately displays. The framework relies on ERC-7730 as the shared format for structured, human-readable transaction descriptions, with descriptors living off-chain in the registry to ensure compatibility with existing contracts. ERC-8176 introduces another standard that allows independent auditors to verify and cryptographically confirm that these descriptions are accurate, with wallets deciding which sources they trust based on reputation and audit attestations.
The standard is explicitly designed to be non-breaking, meaning existing smart contracts, Layer 2 networks and DeFi protocols require no changes to benefit from it. According to The Block, security advocates have increasingly pushed for Clear Signing standards, given that blind signing is a commonly exploitable attack vector. The Lazzarus Group hackers notably stole $1.4 billion from Bybit last year by tricking the exchange into blind signing a malicious transaction. Instead of showing raw hex strings or partial parameter dumps, Clear Signing-compatible wallets will display human-readable descriptions like 'Approve Uniswap to spend up to 500 USDC from your wallet' or 'List CryptoPunk #4156 for sale at 40 ETH on OpenSea'. The approach allows both existing and new applications to provide clear, human-readable descriptions while still allowing their accuracy to be independently verified, with information provided alongside the transaction rather than embedded directly in it. The Foundation's announcement framed that approval gap as the core problem, noting that even after phishing or infrastructure compromise begins a breach, the last action typically falls to the wallet holder, making this defense critical.
The launch has received strong industry support, with Clear Signing contributions from major players including ZKnox, Sourcify, Cyfrin, Zama, WalletConnect, Fireblocks, Trezor, Keycard, MetaMask, Argot, and independent contributors across the ecosystem.
