On May 12, the Ethereum Foundation and an Ethereum Working Group of wallet developers and security firms launched Clear Signing, an open standard for readable Ethereum transaction approvals. According to reports from the announcement, blind signing was identified as a structural flaw linked to billions in user losses, including the Bybit hack. The standard calls blind signing one of DeFi's most dangerous everyday risks because users often approve smart contract transactions they cannot read.
ERA Wallet introduces ERA Lens™, an on-device transaction parsing engine that translates complex smart contract calldata into plain language before signing. As reported by ERA Wallet, the main mechanism decodes function, token amounts, and destination addresses involved in transactions. If a transaction cannot be decoded or does not match a known interface, ERA Lens stops the signing flow and flags it for manual review. According to ERA Wallet Founder Alexey Devyatkin, the device acts as a personal 'Security Island' because without internet connection, no one can alter the data stored on the device.
ERA Wallet implements a QR-only air-gapped signing model using the open EIP-4527 protocol. According to ERA Wallet, this allows users to verify what data the device sends instead of relying on closed APIs or proprietary bridges. The standard notes that QR transmission offers transparency because users can decode the data with tools, while USB and Bluetooth carry a larger attack surface than QR codes. This creates two separate security layers: physical and architectural air-gapping through QR communication, and interpretive on-device decoding through ERA Lens.
ERA Wallet replaces traditional paper seed backup with encrypted NFC Recovery Cards that store seed phrase backup data in encrypted form with PIN protection and limited attempts. The device supports up to 10 independent wallets with their own seed phrases and optional passphrases, allowing separation between long-term holdings, DeFi activity, testing wallets, business funds, and higher-risk interactions. According to ERA Wallet, the Recovery Card is designed to protect information for more than 50 years and is described as dustproof and waterproof.
