Binance founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ) has challenged the conventional wisdom about Bitcoin's path to $1 million, telling Bitcoin Asia 2026 in Hong Kong that the milestone will come much quicker than the commonly cited 25-year timeline. According to reports from Bitcoin Magazine, CZ said "I think it's going to happen much quicker" than the traditional 25-year forecast. His assessment comes as Bitcoin currently trades at $80,232, making a nearly 13x climb to $1 million the target. Speaking at the Bitcoin Asia 2026 conference, Zhao emphasized that Bitcoin's future should not be judged by its price alone, with utility and adoption expected to expand significantly over the next decade.
CZ outlined a comprehensive strategy for Bitcoin's evolution into a strategic asset, arguing that Bitcoin will eventually become more important than gold as a strategic asset. As reported by Bitcoin Magazine, he noted that Bitcoin's market capitalisation stood at around $1.6 trillion, compared with approximately $32.2 trillion for gold. However, Zhao expects this gap to narrow significantly as governments and institutions increasingly embrace digital assets. He emphasized that countries should not view Bitcoin as a threat, instead warning that "Bitcoin is much more dangerous if you don't use it: you're missing out." CZ expects Bitcoin could increasingly be held alongside traditional foreign exchange reserves and eventually play a role similar to gold, with the transition by major economies taking time but the trend toward Bitcoin adoption by governments continuing.
CZ outlined a specific roadmap for achieving the $1 million Bitcoin milestone, emphasizing that utility adoption must precede price appreciation. According to Bitcoin Magazine, his checklist includes mass payment adoption and integration into retirement and pension funds. The Binance executive expects this core infrastructure to be built within 10 years, with several developments already underway. President Trump opened the door for crypto in 401(k)s in August 2025, while Washington also established a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve under a March 2025 executive order. CZ highlighted the rapid development of stablecoins, tokenisation, artificial intelligence and AI agents, saying these areas could become major drivers of growth for the crypto industry over the next decade.
The $1 million Bitcoin target represents a significant move from Bitcoin's current trading level of $80,232, though CZ noted that Bitcoin has achieved similar scale moves before, running from about $5,000 in March 2020 to $69,000 by late 2021. However, not all analysts share the urgency, with Benjamin Cowen recently arguing that crypto is the cheapest since 2010 relative to fair value, suggesting prices could fall further before any run toward record territory. As reported by Bitcoin Magazine, CZ expects Bitcoin to primarily serve as a long-term savings and reserve asset, while stablecoins and other cryptocurrencies could play a larger role in machine-to-machine payments, trading and transactions involving AI agents. His aggressive timeline and the substantial gap between Bitcoin's current value and gold's $32 trillion market cap highlight the significant ground that remains to be covered for his predictions to materialize.
