Cypherpunk Technologies has successfully launched what it claims is the world's largest Zcash mining operation, controlling approximately 18% of the network's hashrate. The Nasdaq-listed company has transformed from one of the largest corporate holders of ZEC into one of the network's biggest operators through this strategic expansion. The mining fleet is already producing 4.2 GSol/s of Equihash hashrate from U.S.-based facilities, representing a significant role in securing one of crypto's largest privacy-focused blockchains while providing direct exposure to newly issued ZEC through mining rewards.
The expansion was financed through a $33.33 million equity transaction with Winklevoss Capital, the investment firm founded by Gemini co-founders Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss. The acquisition involved purchasing a 4.2 GSol/s Zcash mining fleet consisting of Bitmain Z15 Pro machines already operating at facilities across the United States. The transaction was structured through a pre-funded warrant covering 43.29 million common shares rather than cash payment, with the warrant carrying an exercise price of $0.001 per share and the transaction valued Cypherpunk stock at $0.77 per share. The mining operation produces approximately 7,800 ZEC per month, with the company estimating its share at about 1.92% of the circulating supply.
The company has appointed Kevin Zhang as Head of Mining to lead its expanding ZEC infrastructure strategy. Zhang brings extensive experience in Bitcoin and Zcash mining since 2014, making him well-suited to manage the new operation. According to Will McEvoy, chief investment officer at Cypherpunk, the business is already generating positive cash flow without debt. The company estimates that one megawatt of current-generation Zcash machines produces about $450 in revenue per megawatt-hour under current market conditions, compared to approximately $223 for AI data center colocation and $133 for Bitcoin mining. Equipment costs for one megawatt of Zcash mining capacity are estimated at about $2.4 million, significantly lower than the $10-12 million required for AI infrastructure.
The acquisition provides Cypherpunk with a second route for increasing its ZEC holdings beyond open market purchases, positioning the company as a major player in Zcash network security. The operation can supply tokens for its treasury, fund investments in privacy technology, and provide cash for additional expansion. The company's Nasdaq listing (CYPH) now provides U.S. investors with listed exposure to Zcash mining through a publicly traded stock, though share price remains tied to operating costs and ZEC price movements. This strategic pivot represents a departure from the typical approach of most public crypto companies, which have spent the past two years focusing on Bitcoin acquisitions.
