Latin Americans are increasingly adopting stablecoins as a bottom-up dollarization strategy, with the dollar entering everyday financial life across the region. According to BeInCrypto's latest research, more than 99% of tracked stablecoin withdrawal volume moved onward within 30 days, demonstrating the payment network nature of digital dollar usage. On Argentine wallet Lemon, the median withdrawal ranged from $150 to $270 during the first half of 2026, with the average at $544 across 215,597 transfers. Bitso's tracked stablecoin corridor was running at an annualized $31.5 billion in 2026, though this measures gross, bidirectional movement rather than permanent capital flight from the region.
Stablecoins have evolved from crypto tools to financial infrastructure, with supply growing from $6.8 billion in 2020 to $273 billion in 2026 and transaction volumes reaching $10.9 trillion annually. According to the 2025 Global Crypto Adoption Index, individuals in emerging markets hold 66% of the global stablecoin supply across various use cases. Asia leads stablecoin activity with Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines showing the highest adoption rates, while Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America lead in volume relative to GDP. The United States ranks second in stablecoin activity, with the most popular stablecoins pegged to the U.S. dollar to avoid volatility as the dollar serves as the world's primary reserve currency.
Despite the growing adoption of digital dollars, significant safety concerns remain regarding the protection behind these balances. BeInCrypto audited 12 dollar-account products available to Latin American customers, finding that only two placed customer balances in insured US bank deposits, while five used stablecoins. According to Reza Bundy, CEO of Atlas Capital Team, "For a Latin American saver, nominal dollar exposure and preservation of real purchasing power are separate questions." The research reveals that a stablecoin balance could represent an insured deposit, a stablecoin claim or an investment product, with different underlying risks for each structure. Holding dollars can protect against local-currency depreciation, but US inflation can still reduce purchasing power, while stablecoins add issuer, platform and custody risks.
Stablecoins address critical constraints in traditional payment systems, offering near-instant transfers across borders with costs often under $1 per transaction, compared to traditional cross-border payments that take 3-5 days with transaction costs of 2%-7%. According to EY-Parthenon, 41% of organizations using stablecoins have reported savings of greater than 10%. In Latin America, 71% of firms using stablecoins cite international payments as their top use case, while a Mastercard survey found that more than one-third of consumers have used stablecoins for everyday transactions. The technology enables unified global rails that work consistently across borders, overcoming the need for separate national infrastructure connections.
Recent regulatory developments show progress in stablecoin governance, with Singapore's monetary policy framework requiring 100% reserve backing in high-quality liquid assets, monthly attestations, segregated reserve accounts, and Tier 1 capital ratios of at least 8%. The Central Bank of Georgia recently passed regulations allowing registered companies to issue stablecoins pegged to national currency with strict capital requirements. The fragmented regulatory landscape across emerging markets presents challenges, from more progressive approaches like the UAE and Singapore to more restrictive frameworks. The Bank for International Settlements identifies three requirements for stabilizing stablecoin architecture: defined redemption commitment in fiat money, exchange-traded fund-like arrangements, and asset-backing arrangements that are liquid. LMAX Group notes that every major shift in market structure looks slow until it suddenly does not, suggesting that technology availability and clear use cases will drive accelerated adoption once operational advantages become impossible to ignore.
