Cryptocurrency media company Cointelegraph is actively seeking a buyer, according to reports from a person familiar with the matter. The amount of money the crypto media firm has been shopping itself for was not revealed by the source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity as the matter is private. This represents a significant change for the company, which was last acquired back in July 2022 by Luna Media Corporation to fund its global and regional expansions.
Cointelegraph's fortunes were heavily impacted by Google, with the crypto news outlet suffering an 80% drop in organic traffic after Google issued a manual penalty in October 2025. According to reports, the penalty caused the website to disappear from Google's search results, representing a severe blow to the company's digital presence. Prior to the penalty, the media company's website had been compromised by a front-end exploit in June of the previous year.
The impact of these issues is clearly reflected in the company's traffic data. As reported by Similarweb, Cointelegraph's website had more than 12 million monthly visits in December 2024. However, as of September 1, the data show monthly traffic has dropped to just above 700,000 visits. This represents a dramatic decline of approximately 93% in monthly traffic over the course of just over a year.
Founded in 2013, Cointelegraph has established itself as a prominent cryptocurrency news outlet known for its use of cartoon-like characterizations to illustrate news stories. According to its LinkedIn page, the company employs more than 200 people. The company's MENA franchise was previously acquired by Luna Media Corporation in July 2022 to fund its global and regional expansions, indicating previous growth ambitions that now face challenges.
