Cloudflare has officially launched its Monetization Gateway, a new product that enables customers to charge for web pages, datasets, APIs, or MCP tools with payments settled in stablecoins. According to reports from crypto.news, the internet infrastructure company announced this development as part of their expansion into AI-focused payment solutions. The company has now opened a waitlist for businesses interested in utilizing this stablecoin payment solution, indicating strong market demand for the service. Will Papper, a Syndicate alum with five years of blockchain experience, has joined Cloudflare as product manager for Agent Payments, tasked with building payment tooling on stablecoin rails with the Monetization Gateway as the team's first product. Papper previously worked at Syndicate, a blockchain scaling and developer-tooling startup that wound down operations in June alongside two other crypto infrastructure projects.
Payments will settle through x402, a protocol that uses the HTTP 402 "Payment Required" status code for web-based payments. As reported by crypto.news, the process involves a client requesting a paid resource, the server returning a price and payment instructions, and the client paying and resending the request with proof of payment. Cloudflare claims this process achieves sub-second payment settlement and allows sellers to receive stablecoins directly in their wallets or redeem them for fiat currency. The company is building on x402 through the x402 Foundation, the standards group the Linux Foundation launched in April, marking Cloudflare's entry into the stablecoin payment space and providing a new avenue for businesses to leverage blockchain technology for financial transactions. The Monetization Gateway will provide a flexible payment rules API that allows customers to express exactly when they want callers to pay to access digital resources, similar to expressions already used for other Cloudflare rules.
The Cloudflare Monetization Gateway is designed to handle payment checks at the edge before requests reach the customer's origin server. According to The Defiant, the product provides customers with one control panel for payment policies and access controls, supporting usage-based pricing models such as charging per API request, setting variable prices for compute-heavy tasks, or charging only unauthenticated users. The system allows buyers to access paid resources with no signup, no API key, no prior relationship required. Cloudflare pitches the product around AI agents replacing human visitors as the web's dominant traffic source, arguing that shift makes per-seat and subscription pricing a poor fit for machine-to-machine transactions, since an agent reads a page or calls an API once rather than maintaining a monthly account. This same agent-traffic surge is what pushed rival infrastructure providers toward per-request billing over the past year. The company notes that agents can make thousands of micropayments without friction, while asking a person to approve each payment would be impossibly burdensome.
The launch follows earlier collaboration between Cloudflare and Coinbase, which launched the x402 Foundation to promote real-time stablecoin payments for AI agents, apps, and businesses. As reported by crypto.news, the foundation aims to make x402 a common payment layer for online services, with AI agents using x402 to pay for online resources with stablecoins without requiring credit cards, accounts, or manual approval. Amazon Web Services took a similar step in June, plugging Coinbase's version of the x402 protocol into CloudFront and letting publishers charge AI agents per request in USDC. Circle co-founder Jeremy Allaire called it "a big win for data providers and publishers," saying it expands agentic monetization through x402 and USDC. Spark co-founder Sam MacPherson predicted stablecoin payments will drive the next market cycle, while Polygon Labs Chief Technology Officer Mudit Gupta asked which blockchains Cloudflare will support at launch, a detail the company has not yet disclosed publicly. The Monetization Gateway will scale with Cloudflare's global network across 330+ cities, meaning the x402 handshake will occur in close proximity to buyers, reducing request latency and protecting origins.
