A long-dormant bitcoin whale wallet moved approximately $40 million in BTC on Sunday, ending over a decade of inactivity. According to blockchain tracking service Whale Alert, the transfer occurred at around 19:16 UTC on Sunday, shifting funds from address 1KAA8GGhVjjUjVTz1HKAjCyGNzAKQd882j to bc1qm6m6d33d02edr0k8yj9jgt027zl6dvx6thjrxy. The wallet had remained inactive since November 2013, when BTC was originally acquired and subsequently held untouched for more than a decade. However, Arkham Intelligence's address labeling reveals the destination format matches patterns used by institutional counterparties for privacy-preserving large transfers, with the freshly generated SegWit address created just the previous day on May 10, 2026.
The transaction's 0.0001 BTC fee, equivalent to just $8 at current prices, signals non-urgent intent and minimal market impact. As reported by Chainalysis's 2026 Crypto Crime Report, typical BTC exchange inflow transactions have average fees that are 10 times higher. Ki Young Ju of CryptoQuant called it plainly on May 10: "Classic OTC prep, not dump pressure, low fees and non-CEX destination scream institutional." Lookonchain data reinforces this interpretation, showing that 72% of 2026 whale moves involving BTC dormant more than seven years resolved as OTC within 48 hours. A comparable November 2025 event, where 500 BTC moved from a 2012 wallet to a Wintermute-linked address, was later confirmed OTC by the firm's executives directly.
Dormant bitcoin wallets have increasingly resurfaced since BTC first crossed the $100,000 mark in late 2024. According to CoinDesk's market data, as of writing, bitcoin changed hands near $80,700, down over 1% since midnight UTC. The coins in this wallet qualify as genuine Satoshi Era holdings, acquired when BTC traded under $100 and now worth $40 million at current spot prices. The trend was most intense in July last year, when blockchain analytics firms flagged eight Satoshi-era wallets, each holding 10,000 BTC, moving their coins for the first time in 14 years as bitcoin traded above $100,000 and hovered near all-time highs. However, Glassnode's Exchange Inflow Multiple report due May 14 will provide the aggregate view on whether dormant supply is hitting order books at scale.
