
Base has accelerated its Beryl upgrade timeline to June 25, 2026 for mainnet activation, moving forward from the previously scheduled June 26, 2026 date. According to reports from Base, the engineering team announced the deployment on Thursday, marking a significant milestone in the platform's development. The upgrade introduces B20, a native token standard that allows issuers to create stablecoins and other assets directly within Base's node software, representing a fundamental shift from traditional ERC-20 token issuance. As reported by industry observers, this deployment represents a maturation of layer-2 technology that addresses real user pain points rather than theoretical improvements. The upgrade is being released roughly four weeks after Azul was activated on mainnet, with Base attributing this accelerated pace to its February move away from a shared dependency on Optimism's OP Stack and toward its own unified technology stack.
B20 supports the full ERC-20 specification and includes ERC-2612 permit functionality, which enables token holders to authorize spending through signatures rather than separate approval transactions. Unlike traditional ERC-20 tokens that operate through smart contracts, B20 tokens run as precompiled contracts inside Base's node software written in Rust and execute directly within the protocol. The release includes an Issuer Toolkit with role-based permissions, minting and burning controls, optional supply limits, transfer restrictions, and freeze and seizure capabilities intended for regulated issuers. At launch, two B20 versions are available: a general-purpose asset version and a stablecoin version with fixed six-decimal precision and an issuer-defined currency code. The toolkit offers optionality between general-purpose asset models and stablecoin-specific models using six-decimal precision and customizable currency codes, addressing different project requirements from simple utility tokens to regulated financial instruments. B20 is also compatible with the widely used ERC-20 standard, meaning existing crypto wallets, exchanges and applications on Ethereum would also natively work with B20 tokens. The standard comes with an Issuer Toolkit built on code audited by Base and Spearbit, ensuring security standards meet industry requirements.
The upgrade reduces the standard withdrawal period from Base to Ethereum from seven days to five days for the route most bridging providers currently use. According to Base, the original seven-day delay came from Base's earlier fault-proof framework, which reserved time for challenges against disputed withdrawals. Beryl extends work introduced through Azul, Base's first independent network upgrade that reached mainnet in May, which introduced Multiproofs - a system that combines trusted execution environment proofs and zero-knowledge proofs to verify withdrawals and improve security. While the fast withdrawal route using Multiproofs can finalize in about one day, adoption has been limited due to the cost of generating zero-knowledge proofs, making this two-day improvement particularly significant for user experience. The change improves capital efficiency because users and bridge providers can access funds sooner. The seven-day window dates back to Base's earlier fault-proof system, where the long delay was needed so participants could challenge a withdrawal. After the introduction of Multiproofs, the purpose of this delay narrowed to detecting and disabling a faulty prover, allowing the waiting window to be gradually reduced.
The upgrade includes Reth V2, the latest version of the Rust-based execution client that Base adopted after replacing legacy OP Stack clients through Azul. As reported by Base, the software update reduces storage requirements for full, minimal, and archive nodes and enables higher block gas targets without overwhelming sequencer or RPC infrastructure. The infrastructure improvements make node participation more accessible and enable better network scalability. The upgrade also includes Reth V2, a new version of the Reth execution client developed by Paradigm, an Ethereum-focused crypto investment firm co-founded by Coinbase co-founder Fred Ehrsam. According to Base, the latest update reduces storage requirements for nodes and improves processing efficiency. The upgrade cuts withdrawal finality from 7 days to 5, raises throughput by 33%, and reduces disk usage by 50%, adding to Base's sub-cent fees and near-instant confirmations. The company expects future updates to allow issuers to pay transaction fees with their own B20 tokens instead of ETH, with the next planned upgrade, Cobalt, targeted for September 2026.
Base reports early adoption signaling with Coinbase, Clanker, and upcoming stablecoin launches already on board, though this does not prove lasting adoption.
