Cryptocurrency companies are experiencing a significant hiring rebound in September, with job postings more than tripling from 382 in July to 1,241 in September, according to data from crypto-focused recruitment platform CryptoJobsList. This surge represents a more than double increase from August's 886 listings, signaling a recovery from the subdued first half of 2026. The September total was more than double the 573 listings in January, which was the busiest month until August. The number of different companies recruiting also increased to 125 in September, compared to 107 in July, with the platform noting that this acceleration was already well underway in August.
According to reports from The Information, Anchorage Digital CEO Nathan McCauley informed employees about the workforce reduction during the week. A 17% cut would equal approximately 68 jobs if February's headcount remained unchanged. In congressional testimony in February, McCauley put Anchorage's global workforce at approximately 400 employees, making the reported reduction a significant company-wide adjustment. The cuts come against a prolonged downturn in crypto markets, as reported by The Information. The company has made deep cuts before, having laid off 20% of its workforce in 2023, with McCauley later attributing that decision to being cut off from banks.
Despite the surge in job listings, applications have not followed suit, with CryptoJobsList recording 25,700 applications in July, 24,631 in August and just under 20,000 in September. The platform interprets this divergence as evidence that competition for specialist workers is tightening as openings increase. Finance emerged as the largest job category over the past three months, followed by engineering and trading, with stablecoins, AI, security and compliance also in the top 10. Bitcoin was the most frequently sought blockchain familiarity, followed by Ethereum and Solana, reflecting the dominance of these three largest networks in the crypto industry.
The hiring rebound follows Anchorage Digital's $100 million strategic equity investment from Tether announced on February 5. As reported by crypto.news, Tether Investments described the transaction as an expansion of the companies' existing relationship. In its investment announcement, Tether identified custody, staking, governance, settlement and stablecoin issuance among Anchorage's services. The transaction gave Tether an equity investment in the company responsible for issuing its new domestic stablecoin, USAT.
Anchorage joins a growing list of crypto firms implementing workforce reductions in 2026. According to BeInCrypto, Gemini shrank its workforce by about 30%, while Crypto.com cut 12% in March. Coinbase announced it is eliminating about 700 roles, or 14% of staff, in May, and Dune laid off 25% of its team to focus on AI agents and institutional data. Exchange Luno trimmed 20% of its staff in July, and Bitwise cut about 14% in August. The layoffs extend beyond crypto, with US tech firms announcing 10,799 cuts in September, up 77% from August, according to a Challenger, Gray & Christmas report.
